STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1887, page 4, column 4 ALTA I. HOWARD, 08 Aug 1857 - 13 Sep 1887 Died at the home of Mrs. Zalia Cowen, in Angola, Ind., Sept. 13, 1887, Miss Alta I. Howard, aged 30 years, 1 month and 5 days. Deceased was born in Steuben county and resided in Angola until about twelve years ago, when she moved with her father, W. I. Howard, to Rochester, Ind., her home at the time of her death. About three weeks ago she came to Angola for a visit with old friends, and was taken sick about one week after her arrival here. For several years she has been subject to attacks of nervous headache and the last attack terminated in effusion of the brain, partial paralysis and death. Miss Howard was an excellent lady with friends on every side who will miss her much. She was a member of the Daughters of Rebecca, and was the first child born in the family of a member of the I. O. O. F. in Steuben county. Being a consistent, active member of the M. E. church she passed to the other shore with the full assurance of meeting glad hearts and enjoying forever the blessings of that bright home. The remains will be taken to Rochester today for burial. Alta died at the home of Zalia (Stocker) Cowen, who married John William Cowen on 29 Aug 1867. He was born 20 Oct 1834 in England and died at Valley City, Dakota, according to the Cemetery Book. Zalia is mentioned with the listing for her daughter, Roberta Cowen, who married James Redshaw Jr., on 14 Oct 1899.
