STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1901, page 1, column 7 SARAH E. (CARPENTER) HUMPHREYS, 04 Aug 1839 - 26 Apr 1901 Mrs. Sarah E. Humphreys was born in Erie county, Ohio, August 4th 1839, died at the home of her son, Dr. Frank Humphreys, at Angola, Ind., April 26, 1901, aged 61 years, 8 months and 22 days. Mrs. Humphreys was the oldest daughter of Rev. Harlow J. and Fanny Carpenter well known pioneer residents of Otsego township, Steuben county. She taught the first school at Otsego Center in about 1853, and subsequently in the district north of the Center. Afterwards she attended school in Bellevue and Sandusky City, Ohio, and engaged in teaching in Clark county, Ohio, until she united in marriage Nov. 22, 1860, with Robert Humphfreys, of Springfield, Ohio, and with her husband removed to Circleville, Ohio, and lived until 1863 when Mr. Humphreys enlisted in the Union army as sargent, Co. H, 155th Ohio Vol. After his discharge they removed and purchased a farm at Otsego Center, this county. By disabilities contracted in the service, her husband died July 29, 1869, thus Mrs. Humphreys has been a widow for 32 years; four children were born to them, three died before the father, the surviving one being Dr. F. B. Humphreys, of Angola, Ind. Of her immediate relatives, there survive two brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Humphreys will be remembered by numerous friends who knew her well in life as a bright, intelligent, cultured and refined woman and friend, noted for social qualities, goodness and service to the sick or distressed. Christian in life, example, character and devotion, beloved by relatives and acquaintances and all who came in contact with her. She remained on the farm until 1893, when she came and made a happy home with and for her brother, Jesse H. Carpenter in Angola, until within two weeks prior to her death, she went to her son's home. In coming to Angola she entered into and enjoyed life with Angola society with fair prospect of health and pleasure for several years to come, uniting with different church work and fraternal societies. Life enjoyment seemed to be hers, yet in the midst of duty work of he W. R. C. in which she was interested as a soldier's widow, she was stricken with results that close a bright entertaining mind, and further enjoyment of life. While her numerous friends deeply mourn her death, they can regret not, for her sake, she is relieved of suffering here, her bright mind restored by the Deity in whom she is believed in company with loved husband and children gone before.
