STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1901, page 1, column 6 WILLIAM R. INGALLS, 14 Mar 1827 - 07 May 1901 William R. Ingalls was born in Vermont March 14, 1827, and died at Pleasant Lake, Indiana, May 7, 1901, of acute pneumonia, the result of la grippe, aged 74 years, 1 month and 23 days. When but a youth his parents removed to and became members of a Shaker community near Cleveland, O. Their quiet, plodding life was distasteful to the boy and at the age of thirteen he left the community and faced the world for himself, and successfully, too, until years and failing health disqualified him from further effort. While still a resident of Ohio he was united in marriage to Sylvia M. Rowley, to which union were born a son and daughter, Charles A. and Susan M. After the death of his wife Sylvia, he married Lovina J. Thompson, of Steuben township, to which union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, Effie, Lana, William, Lillian, Albert T. and Germ. Of the second union all are living except the mother, Lovina J. and the eldest daughter, Effie. Mr. Ingalls was among the pioneers of the county and cleared up a large farm in Otsego township. But in spite of his laborious physical life he found time to study and master the leading questions of our civil, political and religious life and was well informed upon any and every subject. In civil life he was a member of the Steuben county bar and practiced law in her courts. In political life he was an ardent Republican, though just and generous to opponents in debate. In religion he was a faithful member of the M. E. church for over forty years. He leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances and though the closing years of his life were full of pain and trouble, yet all was borne with the same patient determination and strength of purpose that marked and characterized his whole life.
