STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1886, p.8, c.3. STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, 1904, "24 YEARS AGO, 75 YEARS OF AGE BY JUNE 1, 1880," p.7, c.7. SARAH ANN (DAYTON) JACOBUS, 09 Dec 1798 - 15 Apr 1886 Died, April 15th., 1886, in Salem township, at the home of her daughter, (Mrs. L. A. Emerson,) Mrs. Sarah Dayton Jacobus, aged 87 years, 4 months and 6 days. Sarah Dayton, daughter of John and Margret Dayton, was born in Baskingridge, N.J., December 9th, 1798. At the age of six years her mother died, leaving four children under ten years of age. This loss was deeply felt, causing her to always have the utmost sympathy for motherless children. When 19, she was converted to Christ, during a great revival at Baskingridge under the ministry of Rev. Robert Finly; at that time with 80 others she united with the Presbyterian church. Through all the succeeding years of her life, her faith, and trust were unwavering. At the age of 23, she married Abraham R. Jacobus, of Pine Brook, N.J. She was the mother of eight children, four sons and four daughters, the four sons died in infancy, two daughters in later life and two daughters survive to mourn the loss of a loving and devoted mother. In the spring of 1839, she with her husband, moved to the state of Indiana, settling on a farm in Greenfield township, LaGrange county. Her husband died in October 1851. In 1858, she came to Salem township, Steuben county, where she has since resided with her daughter. Through many years of suffering, her prominent traits of character were patience and cheerfulness, and through her entire life kindness and love were especially manifested toward all. She will be keenly missed from the home circle, where she has been the center for so many years, and was ever ready with acts of kindness ands words of comfort. She passed away in the spring time, just as all nature was bursting into new life. She too has begun a new life, a life that is not for a season, but that shall be eternal in the Heavens. Beautiful twilight, at set of sun; Beautiful goal, with race well run; Beautiful rest, with work well done.
