JEFFERDS, 22 Aug 1809 - 31 Oct 1880 DIED---JEFFORDS---At the residence of his daughter, in Franklin township, DeKalb county, Ind., Oct. 31, 1880, James W. Jeffords, in the 72nd year of his age. Mr. Jeffords was one of the oldest settlers in Franklin Township. He was born in Brunswick, Herkimer county, N.Y., Aug. 22, 1809. He was married to Jane Ann Day at Medina, N.Y., in 1834. Two years later they moved to Toledo, Ohio, and from there to Hamilton, this county, in 1837. Soon after they removed to the farm known as the Jeffords farm, in Franklin township. Mr. Jeffords made the first coffin and helped to dig the first grave for the burial of a white person, at Hamilton. Eleven days after the death of Mr. Jeffords his wife died, her age being 69 years. (This obituary spells the last name as Jeffords. Other sources cited including the biographies say Jefferds.) OTHER INFORMATION: James W. CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE: James Mortimer Jefferds, 28 Aug 1835 - 28 Nov 1907 (1920 per Krontz Cemetery listing), married Pauline (Welch) Jefferds, 1840 - 1915. They are buried at Krontz Cemetery, DeKalb County, Indiana. Pauline was the daughter of Eli and Elvira Welch. Harriet E. (Jefferds) Egnew, May 1842 - died before 11 May 1918, on 27 Dec 1860 in Butler, DeKalb County, Indiana, married William Wallace Egnew, 23 Apr 1838 - 11 May 1918. Harriet's burial place unknown. William is buried at Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, which is where he died. He was the son of George and Alice (Harding) Egnew. Jay Wellington Jefferds, 1845 - 18 Apr 1869, buried at Hamilton Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Mary Jane (Jefferds) Huyck, 04/14 Feb 1847 - 01 Jun 1915, on 23 Mar 1870, in DeKalb County, Indiana, married John Tidd Huyck, 14 Mar 1840 - 11 Mar 1915. They are buried at Waterloo, DeKalb County, Indiana. John was the son of John T. and Lucinda (Basil) Huyck. "History of Steuben County, Indiana, 1885," page 468 lists James W.
