STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1902, PAGE 4, COLUMN 3 MELVINA (CARY) KEYES, 18 Jan 1844 - 08 Jan 1902 Melvina Cary, daughter of William and Melissa Cary, was born in Knox county, Ohio, Jan. 18, 1844. In the fall of 1844 she moved with her parents to Steuben county, Ind., where they settled on section 19 in Richland township, where she grew to womanhood. In the same year, 1844, Tolman and Mary Keyes, also natives of Knox county, Ohio, moved to Richland township, Steuben county, Ind., and thus became neighbors of William Cary. Here it was that Wm. H. Keyes and Melivna Cary became playmates together and attended the same public school, and church services at the Richland Center M. E. church. During the winter of 1859 they were both converted in this church, at the same altar, and united with the church at the same time, under the pastorate of Rev. F. Howenstine. Thirty-seven years ago today, Jan. 10, 1865, she was given in marriage to Wm. H. Keyes, Rev. C. W. Linch, of the M. E. church, spoke the words that made them one and the vows which they made that day have ever been sacredly kept, sharing each others joys and sorrows, and together marched along the King's highway of holiness until at 10:35 o'clock, p.m., Jan 8, 1902, her Heavenly Father bid her hasten her steps to that country where sorrows, afflictions and death are strangers, where she is now in company with father and mother, brothers and sisters who have gone on before. No children were born to them, but they have a foster daughter, Cora, who has been loved and cared for as their own. Mrs. Keyes has been a faithful and consistent member of the M. E. church for 43 years, but on account of poor health for the past year she many times has been deprived of worshiping God in his Temple, but not in her home. With such a life, the end of the earthly pilgrimage has no fears, but calmly let God's will be done. She leaves to mourn her departure a faithful, kind and loving husband, a foster child and a large circle of friends. The funeral was held in the Richland Center M. E. church, Jan. 10, 1902, conducted by Rev. N. P. Barton. Burial in Richland Center cemetery.
