ALANSON KIDDER, 23 Feb 1804 - 05 Sep 1888 One more of the founders of Vermont Settlement and pioneer of Steuben county has passed away. Alanson Kidder was born in Wardborough, Vt., February, 1804. In 1836 he came to Indiana and settled in Millgrove township. Eleven years ago he went to Wisconsin. On Sunday, September 2, he went to church, was taken sick on Monday and died in two days, aged about 84 years. The remains were brought here last Saturday by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis, and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife, who died just thirty-nine years ago. Funeral services at the Congregational church of which we was a member, on Sunday. In the absence of Rev. Rose, Rev. Carpenter conducted the services. On Sunday Mrs. Huxford arrived from the West, but did not reach here until after her father's interment. They are buried at Memorial Grove Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Alanson was the son of Capt. Nathaniel Kidder and Polly (Eddy) Kidder. Lura was the daughter of Col. Josiah Chapin and Nancy (Kelly) Chapin. Alanson died in Trempealeau, Wisconsin. CHILDREN: (The 1st five children were born in Wardsboro, Windham County, Vermont. The last four children were born in Orland, Steuben County, Indiana, formerly known as Vermont Settlemont. Laura C. Kidder, 06 Jul 1831 - 24 Oct 1833, buried in Vermont. Mary Elvira (Kidder) Huxford, 17 May 1834 - 06 Mar 1912, on 09 Mar 1857, married Albert Barnard Huxford, 19 Dec 1832 - 18 Jan 1868. Mary died in Neligh, Antelope County, Nebraska. Albert died in Juneau, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Lura/Lucy Olivia (Kidder) Luce, 23 Mar 1835/36 - 18/19 Mar 1897, on 05 Oct 1855, married George Lester Luce, 14 Apr 1832 - 03 Dec 1889. They died at Lake Village, Newton County, Indiana. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Steuben County, Indiana. George was the son of Walter W. Luce, 08 May 1794 - 20 Apr 1872, and Mary (Gray) Luce, 16 Mar 1803 - 12 Feb 1879, parents of Governor Cyrus Luce, once governor of Michigan. They are buried at Carleton Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Emeline Melissa Kidder, 02 Jul 1836 - no date of death. The cemetery book says the she is buried in Vermont with siblings Alexander and Armantha Kidder. Aramantha/Armantha Eugenia Kidder, 08 Apr 1839 - no date of death. Josiah Herbert Kidder, 29 Aug 1842 - 23 Jan 1911, 07 May 1865, married Emeline A. (Dillingham) Kidder, 16 Mar 1850 - 08 Sep 1867. He married 2nd, Elizabeth (_____) Kidder, no date of death. The 1880 United States Census, shows them living in Freedom, Palo Alto County, Iowa, Family History Library Film #1254359, NA Film Number T9-0359, page #8C. Joseph died in Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado. Emeline is buried at Memorial Grove Cemetery. Alzoa Jane (Kidder) Curtis, 09 Jun 1844, no date of death, on 13 Feb 1867 in Juneau, Dodge County, Wisconsin, married John Curtis, 1838 - 06 May 1915. John died in Snohomish, Snohomish County, Washington. No information on Alzoa. According to the 1880 United States Census, Alanson was living with them in Trempealeau, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, Family History Library Film #1255448, NA Film Number T9-1448, page #171A. Nancy Chapin (Kidder) Friend, 12 Apr 1847 - 01 May 1907, on 18 Oct 1866 married Jefferson L. friend, 29 Nov 1840 - 20 Jan 1903. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.
