BERTHA J. KILES from Steuben Republican, January 9, 1963, page 3, col. 2 BERTHA J. KILES Bertha J. Kiles, eldest daughter of Aaron and Ella Waite, was born in LaGrange county, Indiana, on December 25, 1877, and passed away December 28, 1962, at the Elmhurst hospital in Angola, being aged 85 years and 3 days. Her early life was spent in Branch county, Michigan. At the age of fourteen, she was baptized by the Rev. Cole of the United Brethren Church of East Gilead, Michigan. On February 11, 1908, she was united in marriage to Hugh Kiles and moved to Steuben County, where she spent the remainder of her life. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons, Ray Holiday of Angola; Max Kiles of Lakewood, Ohio; and Leland Kiles of Orland; two daughters, Arlene Slick Cassell of Angola and Leola Cassel of Paulding, Ohio; 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Clarence Waite of Angola and Perry Waite of Crooked Lake; one siser, Laura Hayward of Coldwater, Michigan, and several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends, among whom were several young men to whom she appeared not only as friend but foster mother. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Bertha's father was Aaron Waite who was born 18 May 1851 and died 19 Jan 1922. Her mother was May Ella Cobert who was born 27 Feb 1860 and died 27 Mar 1906. Brother, Clarence Waite was born in 1880 and died in 1969. Brother, Perry J. Waite was born 11 May 1883 and died 16 Mar 1980. Sister, Lura Booth (Waite) Hayward was born 05 Feb 1882 and died in Aug 1971. All of the above including Bertha and Hugh Kiles are buried in Flint Cemetery, Steuben county, Indiana. Bertha's grandparents, Horace Waite (02 Apr 1814-20 Apr 1897) and Mary J (Stayner) Waite (23 Mar 1818-15 May 1867) were early settlers of Steuben county. Mary J. Stayner was the daughter of John and Sarah (Huntsman) Stayner who were regarded as the first settlers in Jackson Praries along with his brother, Jacob, and sister, Sarah (Stayner) Wirick.
