STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 1902, page 5, column 5 LEWIS KIRKWOOD, 30 Oct 1843 - 28 Mar 1902 Lewis Kirkwood was born in Richland county, Ohio, in 1843, and died in Fremont, Indiana, March 28, 1902, aged 58 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Kankamp in 1868. Three children blessed this union, one son, Charles having passed to the sweet resting place in his infancy. Isaac and the daughter, Mrs. James Thompson, still survive the father, the former now residing with his family at Bridgewater, Mich., and the latter a resident of Fremont. Mr. Kirkwood enlisted in Co. H, 87th Ohio volunteers in May, 1862, and was honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of service. He has resided at various times in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, and in 1887 moved to Fremont, which place has since been his permanent home. In 1901, he became a member of the I. O. O. F., of Fremont, and was an ardent and loyal member. Besides the wife and children and their families, he leaves an aged mother, two sisters, and five brothers to mourn his death. He was a faithful and loving husband and father and a most devoted grandfather, always ready to help the needy, and a respected citizen. A few days before his death he called his family to his bedside and bade each a last good bye, with well spoken advice as to passing through this world. He belonged to no church, but each church was a house of God to him. He was a patient sufferer for several weeks, and when the end came passed away calm and peaceful. Funeral services were held in the Evangelical church on Monday, March 31, at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. Ostroth, of Buchanan, Mich.
