STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 1888, p.8, c.2, ALSO MENTIONED JULY 20, 1904, p.7, c.7, "24 YEARS AGO - (CITIZENS) AGED 75 YEARS BY JUNE 1, 1880" JOHN LaRUE, 01 Nov 1804 - 05 Mar 1888 John LaRue was born in the State of New Jersey, Nov. 1, 1804, and died at Hamilton, Ind., March 5, 1888, aged 83 years, 4 months and 4 days. When nine years of age, he left his native State and went to New York, where he was married to Lydia Hoose, on April 18, 1830. In 1838, they moved to Adams, Hillsdale county, Mich., and to Steuben county in 1840, in the vicinity of Metz; from there to Hamilton in 1886. He was one of the pioneers of this county having built his hut, surrounded by the inhabitants of the forests. He worked hard to make a home for his devoted wife and little ones; he was the father of eleven children, eight of whom preceded him to the world beyond. His aged companion, one son and two daughters survive him. Forty years ago he erected a family altar and its fire burned until God called him home. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. L. Ramsey. His body was lain to rest in the cemetery at Powers church, to await the resurrection.
