STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1901, page 3, column 2 ISABELLE (SHIPE) LEAS, 29 Jul 1830 - 26 Sep 1901 Isabelle Shipe Leas was born in Mount Pleasant, West Moreland county, Pa., Jul 29, 1830, and after a brief illness died at her home in Hudson, Salem township, Steuben Co., Ind., Thursday morning, Sept. 26, 1901, aged 71 years, 1 month and 27 days. She moved with her father's family from Pennsylvania to Ohio and from here to Indiana, settling in Fairfield township, DeKalb county. On the 22nd of October 1851, she was united in marriage to Jacob Leas. To this union were born four children, two daughters and two sons, Elizabeth J., Mary A., John T. and Marvin. Her husband preceded her to the spirit world on the 26th of January 1887. Mother Leas was reared in the Christian faith and at the age of 22 she gave her heart to Christ and united with the M. E. church; afterwards she transferred her membership to the Reformed church. She led a faithful, consistent Christian life until death, so that the sorrow of her friends need not be like that of those who have no hope. She leaves to mourn her departure, two sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren, two brothers, five sisters and a host of friends. Their loss we believe is her eternal gain. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church, at Hudson, on Saturday, Sept. 28th conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. A. Seitz, assisted by Revs. Pittinger and Tessing. That she was highly respected was clearly evidenced by the large concourse of neighbors and friends who assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to her. All that was mortal of Mother Leas, was tenderly laid to rest in the County Line cemetery to await the resurrection morn. Peace to her ashes.
