He was born in Allen county, Ohio, February 9, 1827, and lived in that county until the year 1858, when in company with his young wife he came to Otsego township, this county. He married Samantha Everet as his first wife and to them were born three children, two of whom survive their father. In 1863 his wife died. In 1864 he was united in marriage with Susan Teegardin, and to them were born eight children. He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his departure. In the year 1857 James Lewis obeyed the commands of the Savior and became a member of the Christian church and has ever since been a true disciple of the blessed Savior. It is the universal testimony of all who were acquainted with Mr. Lewis that he was a man whose christian character was above reproach, and that he was upright and honorable in all transactions with his fellow men. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: James Lewis, 09 Feb 1827 - 26 Feb 1890, on 24 Sep 1857 in Williams County, Ohio, married his 1st wife, Samantha (Everett) Lewis who died in 1863. Their place of burial unknown. CHILD FROM THE 1ST MARRIAGE: William Lewis, 28 May 1863 - 28 May 1949, on 31 May 1890 married Alta Belle (Kepler) Lewis, 31 Dec 1869 - 05 Jul 1947. They are buried at Hamilton Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Samuel and Malinda (Rosenberry) Kepler. There is a James E. Lewis, age 16 (born about 186, listed on the Census who is probably a child from this 1st marriage even though the age and possible birth year do not agree. The 1st wife died in 1863 and James did not remarry until Nov 1864. James married his 2nd wife on 27 Nov 1864 (per license), Susannah (Teegardin) Lewis, 08 Apr 1842 - 1918, daughter of Aaron and Katy Ann (Sharp) Teegardin. Susannah is buried at Teegardin Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. The Family Group Record lists 9 children for James Lewis and 2nd wife which can be factual as William was James' child. The other children will be listed by name only unless they are in the Cemetery Book as the dates of birth on the Family Group Record for the most part do not agree with the 1880 United States Census report. Malinda Lewis Amos Lewis, 16 Dec 1868 - 1949, buried at Teegardin Cemetery. Catherine/Cassie Lewis Amanda/Mandy Lewis Nathan Lewis Rillie/Aurilla (Lewis) Wolff, 1879 - Aug 1969, on 16 Mar 1902, married Earl Milton Wolff, 1871 - 1949. They are buried at Mr. Pleasant Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Renna/Rennie Lewis, 17 Sep 1881 - 1916, buried at Teegardin Cemetery. Albert Lewis.
