KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, INDIANA. HNERY LINDER, 29 Jun 1832 - 17 Nov 1905 Henry Linder Was born near Mannheim, Germany, June 29, 1832, and died at his home in Angola, Ind., August 17, 1905, aged 73 years, 1 month and 18 days. The subject of this sketch passed his early boyhood in his native land, and came to this country with his parents when he was 14 years of age. They settled in Ohio and he spent several years at Norwalk and Cleveland. He came to Angola in December, 1853, and lived here continuously until his death. He was united in marriage with Helen Hough, Nov. 10, 1858, who died in 1875. In 1880 he married her sister, Laura Kelly, who survives. Since Mr. Linder came to Angola, more than fifty years ago, he has been closely identified with all good phases of the community life. He came here with R. J. Crosswaite and assisted him in mercantile business. Afterward he was a member of the firm of McConnell and Linder, was associated with Austin Fox and James Scoville, and for the past thirty years was a member of the firm of Chadwick, Lansburg & Co., of Pleasant Lake. He was also a member of the firm of Linder and Ramsay, engaged in the manufacture of staves, from 1894 until 1904. In public life he was likewise prominent, and lent his aid always to the upbuilding of the community. In the early 60's he was clerk of the County court, and for ten years at least, at different times, was a member of the Angola School Board. He was one of the promoters of the Tri-State Normal college, and was a trustee in that institution from its beginning until recently. He was a member of the Angola lodge of Odd Fellows since its organization, Jan. 12, 1857, being one of the initiates of the first meeting and was the last survivor of that first meeting. He held every office in the lodge being a trustee for a long time. When the Lake Shore railroad, then the Ft. Wayne, Jackson & Saginaw railroad, was projected through Angola, he was one of the most enthusiastic workers for the line and aided materially in the completion of the enterprise through here. He was appointed the first station master here, which position he held until succeeded by T. E. Purinton in 1883. It was while in the employ of the railroad company that he lost his right arm in assisting in some switching about the yards. From the time of the organization of the first Congregational church in Angola in 1869, he was a supporter of its services and charities and was for many years a trustee of the society. He was a member for the last several years. In all the years of his connection with the church, he was a loyal, unostentatious worker and heaviest contributor to its support. In no place will his loss be felt more than in the church. Thus was passed the life of a busy and active man-one who was always willing to aid in the community's needs, or to help in a quiet way those about him. With all his duties he was a student of the times, a well posted man on current topics and problems of the day. He was a thinker to whom when he had anything to say, men stopped to listen and heed the advice. He was a broadminded, big hearted, generous, patient man. Many have benefitted from his kindly deeds done so unostentatiously that the public knows little how much his life has been to those about him. The neighborhood has suffered a distinct loss, for a life has gone but which has labored constantly for progress in our social institutions and the uplifting of all that is good in the community's welfare. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Congregational church, the sermon being preached by his pastor, Rev. Humfreys. Burial at Circle Hill, services there being conducted by the Odd Fellows, 180 brothers being in line.
