STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 1904, page 3, columns 2, 3 BENAJAH B. LONG, 15 Jul 1823 - 03 Apr 1904 Benajah B. Long was born in Richland county, Ohio, July 15, 1823, and died on Easter morning, April 3, 1904, at Los Angeles, California, aged 80 years, 8 months and 18 days. On July 4, 1836, with his father's family, he started from Ohio to Indiana then almost a wilderness, and traveling with an ox team, arrived at Pleasant Lake, Steuben county, July 25, 1836, the journey occupying twenty-one days. His boyhood days were spent on the farm helping to clear forests and build a home during which time he experienced the hardships and privations common to pioneer life. When he reached his majority he engaged in mercantile business at Flint, Steuben county, and afterwards at Hamilton, Indiana. And almost at the beginning of the history of Waterloo he cast his fortunes there, and for many years was one of the leading men of that place, discharging with fidelity everything that came to his hand. In 1850 he was united in marriage to Orsavella Clark, the eldest daughter of the late Dr. A. P. Clark, of Pleasant Lake, one of the foremost citizens and early practitioners of Steuben county. To this union were born three sons, Edgar E., Clark A. P., and Frank B., the second son having died in the spring of 1884. His wife died June 29, 1885, and on July 5, 1887, he was united in marriage with Olive A. McQueen, nee Beard, and lived in happy union until the date of his death. Over two years ago they located in Los Angeles, Cal., to be near his sons in his declining age where on a lovely Easter morning, amidst beautiful roses and surrounded by his friends, his earthly existence was changed into a glorious resurrection of the new life. He leaves to mourn his departure a faithful and devoted wife, two sons, three grandchildren, three brothers, Albert W., Dennis and James Long, also one sister, Caroline Albee, and hosts of friends. He united with the First Presbyterian church of Waterloo on confession of faith in 1892, and a few months since was transferred by letter to the Emmanuel Presbyterian church of Los Angeles, Calif., and during these years was devoted to his church and a faithful attendant on public worship. Only a few days before his death he joined with his wife in singing "Nearer My God to Thee," and other favorite hymns. (Picture included with obituary) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Benajah B.
