STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, 21 Dec 1887, p. 8, c.4, also "24 YEARS AGO, 20 Jul 1904, p.7, c.7, 75 YEARS OF AGE BY O1 Jun 1889" ISAAC LUCE, 19 Feb 1800 - 08 Dec 1887 Isaac Luce was born February 19, 1800, in New Brunswick, and when twelve years old moved with his parents to Vermont, where he lived until he was a young man. He then went to Genesee county, N.Y., and after living there twenty years, came west to Tuscarawas county, Ohio, where he lived twelve years, engaged most of the time in brick making. He then removed to Columbiana county, and in 1858 came to York township and bought a wild farm, and changed the forest into a nice home in which he died December 8, 1887. He was the father of eight children, seven of whom survive him. He leaves no enemies, but a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. He was a stalwart as a farmer, faithful as a son, true and kind as a husband and unexacting as a father. As a friend and neighbor he was ever ready to lend a helping hand to the needy. In his early life he accepted the Gospel of Christ and died in the faith of its promises. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Isaac Luce, 19 Apr 1800 - 08 Dec 1887, married Elizabeth/Eliza A. (_____) Luce, 27 Jul 1814 - 27 Mar 1881. PLEASE NOTE the difference in Isaac's date of birth. The Cemetery Book states he died on 08 Dec 1887 as does his obituary and this is most likely true as it was printed in the 21 Dec 1887 issue of the newspaper. The Cemetery book states he was 87 years, 7 months and 19 days old which would make his birth date in April, not February. I have no way of knowing which is correct. Elizabeth was born 27 July (possibly) 1814 and died 27 Mar 1881. Cemetery book states she was 66 years and 8 months old when she died. They are buried at Dygert Cemetery, Steuben County, IN . Their son, Isaac Luce was born about 1859 according to the 1880 U. S. Census. Page 1162 in the Audree Seibel Lewis' Cemeteries of Steuben County, IN, 1990, states there is possibly a grave for an Annie (Houseman) Luce, 07 Nov 1863 - 21 Jun 1900, who married an Isaac Luce on 25 Jan 1883 in Steuben County, IN. She is buried in Dygert Cemetery. In the 1870 U. S. Census, there is also an Elizabeth Fosdick, age 75 listed as living in Isaac's home. I could not make out the relationship. She was born about 1795. None of the other Luce children seem to be listed in the Cemetery book so perhaps they did not move to Indiana with the parents.
