STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1885, p.4, c. 5,6; STEUBEN RPEUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, 1904, "75 YEARS OF AGE BY 01 JUN 1880," p.7, c.7. MARY A. (YOUNG) MACARTNEY, 23 Dec 1787 - 06 Jan 1885 Mary A. Macartney was born Dec. 23, 1797, at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and in 1820 was married to Thomas Macartney. Four years later they removed to Ontario county, in western New York, and in 1829 to Canada, where her husband died. In 1838 she removed with her children to Cuyahoga county, Ohio, and to this county in 1844. For many years her home was in York township; afterwards she resided for several years with her eldest son, at Waterloo, and from there removed to Angola which has since been her home. She was the mother of five children, three of whom survive her. In early life she united with the Presbyterian church and later with the Disciple's of which organization she has been a consistent member for nearly fifty years. For several years the infirmities of age, chief among which was almost total blindness, have confined her closely to her home, but to those who knew her during her more active life, her intelligent converse, her genial companionship will always be grateful remembrances. Notwithstanding the fact that for so long a time she had been bereft of her sight, she was remarkably well posted on all the leading events in the history of the world, present as well as past, and no one could long remain with her without becoming wiser and better in every way. Several weeks ago she became suddenly worse and it soon became evident that her earthly pilgrimage was about o'er. Day by day she continued to grow weaker until Tuesday morning at five o'clock when, "Like a clock worn out with eating time, The wheels of weary life at last stood still."
