STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1903, page 1, column 6 ASA MALLORY, 17 Oct 1824 - 19 Oct 1903 Asa Mallory, son of David and Cynthia (Collins) Mallory, was born in Rutland County, Vermont, October 17, 1824. In the fall of 1827, he came to Indiana with his parents. His early life was spent on the home farm, remaining with his parents as long as they lived. In 1850, he moved to California, making the trip overland, arriving in the Eldorado of the west six months after leaving home. He went to work in the mines and contracted typhoid fever. After several weeks illness, his physican told him his only chance of recovery was to return to the States by water. After a voyage of fifty-five days he reached New York, but the exposure and hardship he had undergone left their impress on his system, and it was months before he regained his usual health. After his return home, he assumed charge of the homestead and went to work to retrieve his losses in the west. The result was soon an addition of 125 acres to the original forty acres entered by his father, and also good buildings and other improvements. Mr. Mallory was married in 1860 to Sytheria E. Wright, daughter of Sherman and Anna (Failing) Wright, old residents of Steuben county. For ten years he had been a great sufferer, all of which he bore with great fortitude until the Angel of Rest released him on October 19 at 1:25 a.m. He leaves a wife and six children: Mrs. Cynthia B. Green, of Cadillac, Michigan; Mrs. Flora E. McClue, Frank L., Herbert C. Clarence A., and Clyde L., of Steuben county, also seven grandchildren and three sisters besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was a true husband, a kind father, a good neighbor and an upright, honest citizen. The funeral services were held at the home by Rev. T. L. Dyer, Wednesday afternoon, October 21, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Jamestown cemetery. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Asa Mallory, 17 Oct 1824 - 19 Oct 1903, married Sytheria E.
