STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2, 1904, page 1, column 7 LEVI MATHEWS, 18 Oct 1829 - 26 Feb 1904 Levi Mathews was born in Chester county, Penn., Oct. 18, 1829, and died at his home near Angola, Indiana, Feb. 26, 1904, aged 74 years, 4 months and 8 days. In 1852 at the age of twenty-three years, he came with his parents to Steuben county, settling on the bank of Fish creek in Richland township. Feb. 15, 1855, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Waller, and to this union were born six children, three sons, Evans, Silas and Charles, and three daughters, Hannah Sherwood, Sarah Manahan, and Alice, all of whom with the wife and mother survive him. He also leaves one brother, Amos, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Casey, of Butler, Indiana. About forty years ago the subject of this sketch moved with his family from Richland township to a home on North Wayne Street in Angola, where they resided until a few years ago when they purchased a home a mile west of Angola. Mr. Mathews lived a quiet, unassuming life, and always held the respect and esteem of his fellows. As a mechanic he was counted among the very best, his work on our public buildings, court house and jail, and the beautiful walls under many of our homes stand as monuments to his honest, efficient work. There was not an element of hypocrisy in his make up, and his life was an open book. His home was always a center of hospitality, and the members of his family were held together by ties sacred and enduring to an unusual degree. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Revs. Biven and Neal, and were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Burial in Crockett cemetery, only a few rods from where he lived. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Levi Mathews, 18 Oct 1829 - 24 Feb 1904, married Elizabeth M. (Waller) Mathews, 23 Aug 1834 - 05 Jul 1906.
