STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 1904, page 1, column 5 EBEN P. McALISTER, 31 May 1825 - 14 Apr 1904 Eben P. McAlister, a much respected citizen of Echo, Michigan, died at the residence of his son, Wilson H., on Thursday, April 14, 1904, at the advanced age of 78 years, 10 months and 14 days. He was born at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania, and was married to Miss B. Helen Root, at Jamestown, Ind., March 10, 1852. He resided in Indiana for 27 years and in North Dakota for 16 years. He spent three years in Milford, Kansas, and has since 1901 made his home in Echo. His family consisted of seven children of whom three survive him and grieve over the loss of a revered and loved father. He had been a Christian for more than forty years. In former years he was one of the best tenor singers and music teachers in the communities in which he resided. He was a very skillful workman at his trade as blacksmith. He was much respected in Echo and took great interest in the neighborhood about him, especially in its religious development. He and his wife were members of the Congregational church recently organized in Echo. His wife deeply mourns his loss, but looks joyfully forward to meeting him again soon, within the gates of pearl. There was a larger attendance at the funeral services, which were conducted by Rev. E. M. Corey. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Eben McAlister, 31 May 1825 - 14 Apr 1904, married B. Helen (Root) McAlister. Eben died in Echo, Michigan. Burial place unknown. 1880 United States Census, Jamestown, Steuben County, Indiana, Family History Library, #1254312, NA Film Number T9-0312, Page Number 340C, lists two daughters, Mary McAlister, age 10, and Susan McAlister, age 4. 1880 United States Census, Echo, Antrim County, Michigan, Family History Library, #1254570, NA Film Number T9-0570, page number 580D, lists Wilson H. McAlister, age 36 (born about 1844), born in Indiana whose father was born in PA. Eben is listed in the census as being born in NY which must be incorrect as the obituary says he was born in Pennsylvania. But the census gives a birth year of about 1832 (listed as age 48) for Helen, which would mean she was about 12 years old when Wilson was born. Helen could have been a 2nd wife as the 2 daughters were born about 1870 and 1876 which is a great many years from Wilson's birth year of about 1844.
