STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, APRIL 27, 1904, page 1, column 6 JOHN C. MERRY, 27 Apr 1833 - 16 Apr 1904 John C. Merry died Saturday night, April 16, 1904, in Sturgis of stomach trouble, aged 70 years, 11 months and 19 days. Deceased was born at Deerfield, Portage county, Ohio, April 27, 1833, the son of Powell and Caroline Diver Merry. With his parents he moved to Steuben county, Indiana, in 1854, and united in marriage with Miss Mary Balding, Sept. 27, 1857. They came to Sturgis in 1863, and this has been their home for over forty years. Mr. Merry was engaged for a number of years in the manufacture of windmills and pumps and subsequently built and operated the feed mill for a number of years. After disposing of the property he engaged in the oil business and subsequently in buying farm produce and supplying the farmers with groceries for which he equipped a very complete store on wheels. He continued this business until late last fall when failing health confined him to the house. He has been a great sufferer for many months and his family and friends and brother Odd Fellows have tenderly cared for him and done all in their power to alleviate his suffering. Six children were born to them, of whom three with the widow survive, Lewis E. of Toledo, Harry of Avilla, and Mrs. Mabel Baldwin of Sturgis. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. G. F. Sheldon officiating, and the burial service was conducted by the Odd Fellow lodge. The relatives present from out of town were: His son, Lewis E. Merry, wife and three children, of Toledo; son, Harry Merry, wife and son of Avilla; his only brother, H. O. Merry, of Angola, Indiana; brother-in-law, Thomas Legg and wife of Orland; Mrs. Balding, of Angola, and Miss Maude Balding, of South Bend. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: John C. The same census shows Lewis Merry, age 21, with wife Effie Merry and daughter living next door to his parents, on page 477B. Parents: Powell Merry, 01 Mar 1808 - 16 Aug 1895, and Laura Caroline (Diver) Merry, 12 Oct 1809 - 19 Feb 1881. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. Powell's 2nd wife was Amelia (Kinnaman) Merry, no dates or place of burial. Brother: Horace O. Merry, 1835 - 1923, married Elizabeth (Ellison) Merry, 22 Mar 1835 - 09 Mar 1907. They are buried at Powers Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana.
