STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 1901, page 1, column 6 ELIAS E. NICHOLS, 28 Feb 1826 - 19 May 1901 (Picture included with obituary) The subject of the above sketch was born in Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, England, on the 28th day of February, 1826, and died in Angola, Indiana, May 19, 1901, at the age of seventy five years, two months and twenty one days. Mr. Nichols emigrated to this country with his first wife, Matilda, forty seven years ago this spring, and settled in the Powers neighborhood in Steuben county. There he lived about fifteen years when he moved o Wisconsin where he was engaged in farming and stock raising. Having accumulated a competency in this business he sold his land and stock and returned to this county, taking up his residence in Angola. Here he lived out the last eighteen years of his life as a retired farmer. He has been a great sufferer from heart and stomach troubles for many years, and death came very gradually and painfully to him. He was twice married. His first marriage was with Matilda S. Stanley, and his second with Caroline F. Warner. No children were left by either marriage. His first wife preceded him in death eighteen years (ago), and his second wife survives him. The funeral services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Angola today, May 22, and the body will be laid to rest in Circle Hill cemetery. Mr. Nichols was a typical Englishman, and had all the courage and resolution of his nationality. He came to Steuben when the country was new and sparsely settled and became one of its pioneers. In politics he was a staunch Republican; in religion a devout and life long Methodist. He was a member of the church sixty-seven years, having united when but eight years of age and was always one of its hearty supporters and most liberal contributors. Before he came to this county he and one of his friends built a church in England and paid the cost of its construction from their private purses. He gave life, character and standing to every organization to which he belonged. Until recent years he was a member of the church choir, and those who have heard him sing, though it may have been years ago, will remember his rich, musical bass voice. For more than twenty-five years he was superintendent of the Sunday school. He had a word of cheer and encouragement for every one and a youthful spirit which never left him. He will be long mourned and greatly missed by a large number of friends, and those who knew him best loved him most. He had an unwavering faith in the providence of God and died believing steadfastly in a blessed immortality. His life was worthy of emulation and his death closes an uncommon career.
