STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1880, p.8, c.4 OLIVE CORDELIA (ORTON) CARKHUFF PATTERSON, 14 Jun 1830-28 Aug 1880 DIED: PATTERSON--In Angola, of cancer of the breast, Olive C., wife of Freeborn Patterson, aged 50 years, 2 months and 14 days. The deceased was born in Erie, Pa., and moved with her parents to Angola in the year 1838. She was married to William Carkhuff in September 1847, and by him was the mother of four children, two of whom are now living--Mary, wife of Dr. T. B. Williams, and Ollie, wife of F. W. Bodley. Her husband died February 13, 1861. She married Freeborn Patterson, January 10, 1863. Deceased united with the Presbyterian church in April, 1865, living a pure, devoted and christian life. In her death her husband has lost a true and loving wife, her children a kind, affectionate and devoted mother, and society one of its best and brightest ornaments. The funeral took place Monday, 2 o'clock, Rev. J. V. Hickmott officiating. (Cemetery book states he died in March, obituary states he died in February.) Olive was the daughter of Darius Orton Jr., born at New Haven, CT., on 10 Dec 1788 and died 22 Feb 1841, and Mercy Jane (Dustin) Orton, 17 Sep 1793 - 23 Jan 1893 (Dec. per cemetery book). They were married in 1819 at Harborcreek, Erie County, PA. They are all buried at Old Angola Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, IN. CHILDREN OF THE 1ST MARRIAGE: Mary Louisa (Carkhuff) Williams, 07 May 1847 - 29 Dec 1914, on 09 Aug 1866, married Dr. Thomas Burgess Williams, 06 Sep 1838 - 16 Aug 1907. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, IN. Olive C. (Carkhuff) Bodley, 1851 - 1927, on 15 Sep 1874, married Fleming "Flem" Wilson Bodley Sr., 24 Nov 1844 - 15 May 1895. "Flem" was the son of William Bodley who died 08 Mar 1861 and Sarah "Sally" (____) Bodley who died 02 Mar 1879. Children of Fleming and Olive Bodley were Thomas Bodley, 1870 - 1949, and Leona Bodley, 1875 - 1940. They are all buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. William C. Carkhuff died 04 Mar 1852 and is buried at Old Angola Cemetery. SECOND MARRIAGE: On 11 Jan 1863 in Steuben County, IN, under the name of Olive C. Carkhuff, she was married to Freeborn Patterson, 16 Oct 1825 - 20 Jul 1893, who was born in Orange Township, Ashland County, OH. He was the son of William Patterson, born 27 Aug 1786 in Ireland and died 13 May 1867 in Orange Township, Ashland County, OH. On 20 May 1819 in Richland County, OH, he married Jane (Freeborn) Patterson, 03 Jul 1797 - 19 Mar 1858. Freeborn Patterson is buried at Old Angola Cemetery. She was the daughter of David Mallory, 14 Feb 1794 - 14 Oct 1864, and Cynthia (Collins) Mallory, 30 Nov 1790 - 20 Oct 1868. On 01 Dec 1881, Amanda married John Leas IV, born 12 Jul 1815/16 at Gettysburg, Adams County, PA., and died 16 Jul 1897 in Angola, Steuben County, IN. Robert Patterson is buried at Old Angola Cemetery. Amanda is buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, IN. David and Cynthia Mallory are buried at Jamestown Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. Mary Jane Patterson, born 10 May 1823 in Orange Township, Ashland County, OH., and died on 10 Jan 1892 in the same township. Elizabeth (Patterson) Marshall, born between 1820-1825, died before 15 May 1858, on 15 Apr 1847 in Ashland County, OH., married William Marshall, born about 1820. Sarah Patterson, 01 Aug 1827 - 07 Apr 1893, born and died in Orange Township, Ashland County, OH. James Patterson, 12 Oct 1831 - 14 Jul 1849, born and died in Orange Township, Ashland County, OH. William Patterson, born about 10 Oct 1833 in Orange Township, Ashland County, OH., and died about 21 Feb 1858. On 26 Jul 1857 in Steuben County, IN., married Mariah /Maria (Bigler) Patterson Carey, born about 1835, no date of death. As a widow, on 04 Feb 1862 in Steuben County, IN., she married Bartley Carey, born about 1835. William is buried in Old Angola Cemetery, Row M, Stone 9. The cemetery book on page 1420 gives the date of death as 21 Dec 1858, age 24 years, 4 months and ll days. John Patterson, 02 Apr 1836 - 10 Mar 1893, married Ellen M.
