STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 1904, page 1, column 6 JAMES PORTER, 11 Aug 1840 - 20 Apr 1904 James Porter was born in Niagura county, state of New York, August 11, 1840(sic) and died in Angola, April 20, 1904, aged 57 years, 6 months and 9 days. At the age of 16 he joined the army and remained in the service three long years. April 9, 1869, he was united in marriage with Mary J. Diamond, who departed this life Jan. 19, 1881. To this union were born three children, Myrtie Souder, of Angola, Ira F. Porter, of Bagnall, Michigan, and Alma E. Cole, of Angola. In 1864(sic) he was again married, and this time with Mary Shank, who died July 20, 1899. He leaves to mourn their loss one son, two daughters, five grandchildren and a host of friends. Though a great sufferer the last few days, he bore it all without a word of complaint. Funeral services were held at the Powers church, April 23, conducted by Frank Working. Porter, Wife, age 28, born in 1851 or 1852. Mertie C. Porter, Dau, age 9, born in MI. Ira F. Porter, Son, age 8, born in IN. Almy E. Porter, Dau, age 6, born in IN. Alma E. (Porter) Cole, 1875 - 1928, is buried at Powers Cemetery. 2nd wife, Mary (Shank) Porter died 20 Jul 1899, burial place unknown. Items which differ: James date of birth differs from the Cemetery Book which states 1846. The obituary states he was born in Niagura County, New York, The 1880 Census states he was born in Canada. Possibly Niagara County, Canada? Computing the date of birth by using date of death and 57y.6m.9d. mentioned in the obituary, date of birth would be 11 Oct 1846. The obituary states James married a 2nd time to Mary Shanks in 1864, possibly should be 1884 as the 1880 Census shows the 1st wife alive and her date of death is listed as 19 Jan 1881 in the obituary.
