STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 1904, page 1, column 5 ALONZO POWERS, 06 Aug 1836 - 09 Apr 1904 Alonzo Powers, eldest child of Calvin and Emeline Powers, was born in Allen, Allegany county, new York, August 6, 1836. His parents removed to York township, in Steuben county, Indiana, in 1837, and helped to found what was known as the "Powers Settlement" in the early history of this region; and there he grew to manhood, receiving such education as the district schools of that period afforded. August 5, 1860, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Gibbony, of York township. One child, a daughter, was born to them. She died in her tenth year, and August 21, 1888, the wife and mother followed her to the grave. Excepting a few years that Mr. Powers lived in Big Rapids, Michigan, his home was always in Steuben county; and for the last dozen years or more, he had lived in Angola. He had been a member of the Masonic Fraternity nearly forty years, and he was rarely absent from meetings of his Lodge. He was quiet and unassuming, always cheerful, fond of children, and ever ready to help in time of need. After suffering from heart disease several months, he departed this life quite suddenly the morning of April 9, 1904, aged 67 years, 8 months and 3 days. Two brothers, George W. Powers, of Steuben township, and Frank M. Powers, of Angola, also three sisters, Mrs. E. O. Rose, Mrs. T. F. Wood and Mrs. H. H. Keep, all of Angola, survive him. Of the six children of the late Calvin Powers-all now past middle age-he was the first to cross the dark river. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon in the home of his sister, Mrs. E. O. Rose, Prof. L. W. Fairfield officiating, the exercises concluding with the impressive Masonic burial service, conducted by Angola No. 236, of which deceased was a member.
