MILDRED (WAITE) POWERS, 18 Jan 1909 - May 1982

   Mildred Waite Powers, 73, of Lakeland, Fla., died Tuesday in her home 
there.  She had been ill for an extended period of time.
   Mrs. Powers, a former Butler resident, was co-owner of the Butler 
Record-Herald newspaper with her husband, the late Burdette Powers.  Mr. 
Powers died October 21, 1981.
   Mrs. Powers was born in Steuben County and was the daughter of the late 
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Waite of Angola.
   Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Eunice Powers of Butler, two 
grandsons, Roger Powers of Butler and James Powers of Edgerton, Ohio; a 
brother; two sisters and a great-granddaughter.
   Services were held in Lakeland.

   Mildred (Waite) Powers, 18 Jan 1909 - May 1982, married Burdette Powers 
who died 20 Oct 1981.  Mildred descended from the first permanent white 
settlers in Steuben County, Indiana.  She was the daughter of Clarence 
Waite, 25 Aug 1880 - 1969, and Oda E. (Mercer) Waite, 1892 - 1969, buried 
at Flint Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. 
   Her grandparents were Aaron Waite, 18 May 1851 - 19 Jan 1922, and Ella 
(Cobert) Waite, 27 Feb 1860 - 27 Mar 1906, buried at Flint Cemetery on the 
same plot as Clarence and Oda Waite.
   Her great-grandparents were Horace Waite, 02 Apr 1814 - 20 Apr 1897, 
and Mary J. (Stayner) Waite, 23 Mar 1818 - 15 May 1867, buried at Jackson 
Prairie Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana.
   Her great-great-grandparents were John Stayner, 08 Dec 1796 - 05 Sep 
1870, and Sarah (Huntsman) Stayner, 12 Jan 1797 - 15 Feb 1873, buried at 
Jackson Prairie Cemetery. 
   John and Sarah Stayner; Jacob Stayner, 29 Nov 1787 - 07 Jan 1843, and 
Nancy Eliza (Huntsman) Stayner; George Wirick, born ab. Apr 1790, died 06 
Oct 1868, and Sarah (Stayner) Wirick, 05 Apr 1805 - 28 Jul 1864, were the 
pioneers who were the first permanent white settlers in Steuben County.
