STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1872, page 3 STEPHEN A. POWERS, 02 Jan 1800 - 05 Oct 1872 DIED in Mancellona, Antrim county, Michigan, Saturday, Oct. 5, 1872, Stephen A. Powers aged 72 years. The subject of the above, merits more than a mere passing notice. He was the oldest of a large family of brothers, nearly all of whom were among the early settlers of the town of York, Steuben county, Indiana, migrating there from New York, which was their native State. He was a thorough scholar, and during his life time, was honored with numerous positions of trust and profit. As a parent, citizen and neighbor, he was a member in high standing in both the Odd Fellows' and Masonic Fraternities, and was buried with the solemn ceremonies of the latter order. When the war of the late rebellion broke out, he determined to enter the military service, and though the storms of sixty-one winters had passed over his head, he insisted that he was still young enough to aide in maintaining the supremacy of the constitution and laws of his country, and defend it against the attack of rebels and traitors. He served nearly a year in Co. A, 44th Regt. Ind. Vols. with which it was our fortune to be connected. Failing health finally rendered his discharge from service absolutely necessary, though he protested against it. Something over a year ago, he took up his residence in Antrim county, where his truly eventful life was terminated. His wife, the partner of his youth, survives him, and she has the sympathies of an unusually large circle of relatives and friends. - (Big Rapids Magnet) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Stephen A.
