KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, STEUBEN COUNTY, INDIANA WINN POWERS, 08 Dec 1801 - 24 Jun 1883 Powers, aged 81 years, 6 months and 19 days; Winn Powers was born at Ft. Stanwix, now Rome, Oneida county, N. Y., December 8, 1801. His father died while he was young, soon after which he was placed by his mother under the roof of a stranger. He received a fair education and when he arrived at manhood began teaching school and taught about three months of each year for three years, the balance of the time being spent on a farm. At this time he resided in Ontario county, N. Y., where his parents removed when he was an infant and where his father died in 1808. On April 29, 1825, he was united in marriage to Betsey Reeves. Soon after their marriage they removed to Allegany county, that state, where they settled upon a wild farm. In 1836 they disposed of their property there and started for Indiana. On July 8, 1837, they arrived in York township. In the following January, Mr. Powers bought 120 acres in section twenty-nine, that township, and always resided in the same neighborhood. He was the father of seven children, six of whom survive him. For almost thirty years, he was a member of the Masonic order in which he held many positions of trust. By his death Steuben county loses an honored citizen and one who did much to aid every enterprise calculated to better the condition of the people. Of him it may be truthfully said, he was one of the noblest of God's works--an honest man. FOUNDING OF POWER'S CHURCH: From the Power's Family History, page 40: "As time passed and new settlers arrived and the population of the township and near-by communities increased, the need for a meeting place for religious worship became more apparent and pressing. In order that such a building might also provide a place and shelter for burial services, a plan was devised for the erection of a neighborhood church at the Powers Cemetery. Winn Powers, together with his brother, Calvin, took an active interest and leading part in the planning of this enterprise. Beginning in the fall of 1875 he circulated the subscription paper prepared by Mrs. Riley Powers who was also deeply interested in the project, and solicited contributions of money, labor and material. A considerable part of the travel to accomplish this was done on foot through woodlots and fields, with which he was thoroughly familiar. There were 102 subscription ranging from $1.00 to $100.00. The total of money, labor and material subscribed was $1827. The church was built during the summer of 1876. The M. E. Class at York provided the furnishings of carpets, chairs, lamps, stoves, etc., and the balance for the completion of the cost was raised on the day of dedication, October 15, 1976, thus providing this community with a new church building without indebtedness."
