STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, August 10, 1898, page 8, column 4 CALEB RAKESTRAW, ab. 13 Jan 1821 - 02 Aug 1898 DIED at his home in Metz, Steuben county, Ind., Aug 2, 1898, Caleb Rakestraw, aged 77 years, 6 months and 20 days. Deceased was born in Smith township, Mahoning county, Ohio, in 1821, and in 1848 was joined in marriage with Miss Elezan Smith. To the union were born four children, Oscar F., now residing in Angola, Ind; Mary, wife of J. A. Dustman, Coldwater, Michigan; Elizabeth, wife of Richard F. Gale, Elwood, Ind.; and Dr. Anna H. Rakestraw, Salina, Kansas. The wife and mother died Nov. 5, 1874. Mr. Rakestraw was again married in 1878 to Mrs. Catherine Engle, and to them was born a child, now Mrs. E. M. Boyer, of Springville, Utah. There are also two step-children, Firm Engle, of Metz, and Mrs. Mort Dalley, of Alvarado. Deceased came to Steuben county and settled on the farm where he died, in 1858, where for forty years he had kept hotel. His life was quiet and unassuming. Naturally kind and sympathetic, the poor and needy always found in him a generous friend. For many years he was a great sufferer, and yet in spite of it all he was cheerful and courteous to those about him. Funeral services at the Christian church in Metz, conducted by L. W. Fairfield, of Angola, and attended by a large circle of neighbors and friends. (Rakestraw) Gale, 1851-1907, married Richard R. Gale, 1846-1922. Caleb and Elezan are buried at Metz Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Oscar and Melissa, Elizabeth and Richard, and Dr. Anna Rakestraw are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Indiana.
