STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31 1883, p.5, c.4 JACOB OVERROCKER ROSE, 18 May 1814 - 24 Oct 1883 Jacob O. Rose, died at Big Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday, October 24, 1883, of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of two weeks. He was born at Schaghticoke, New York, May 18, 1814, where his childhood was passed. In early manhood he followed the tide of emigration westward and located in Cuyahoga county, Ohio, where he married and made his home for many years. In 1842, he visited Steuben county and purchased what is now the Kirk farm in York township, on which he moved with his family three years later. In 1853, he bought the farm now owned by James Robinson, on which he resided until 1866, when he removed to Big Rapids, Mich., where he has lived nearly all the time since. Mr. Rose has passed a life of unusual business activity, and during his residence in this county he was identified with many important public enterprises. He served for many years in various offices in his township, always discharging his trust with intelligence and fidelity. In 1861, Mr. Rose, in company with F. Macartney, purchased the STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, and for more than two years of the war period, he held his connection therewith. During this time he was not in immediate charge of the paper, but bestowed much time and energy in its management and in advancing the cause which it so warmly advocated. After his removal to Michigan, he aided largely in building up a new city in the pine woods. His wife and two sons survive him---E. O. Rose, editor and proprietor of the Post, Grand Rapids, Mich., and M. F. Rose, trustee of York township, in the county. They are buried at Powers Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Mary Ann was the daughter of Stephen Comstock who died 12 Jan 1858, aged 65 years and 10 months, and Charlotte (Fitch) Comstock who died in 1829 in Ohio. Stephen is buried at Powers Cemetery. Jacob was the son of Elias and Eva (Overrocker) Rose. CHILDREN: Elias Overrocker Rose, 13 Oct 1838 - 22 Oct 1909. He was a 1st Lt., Co. A, 44th Ind. Vol. On 03 Jul 1858 in Amboy, Hillsdale County, Michigan, he married Harriet (Powers) Rose, 30 Sep 1840 - 07 Dec 1925. Elias died in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. Harriet was the daughter of Calvin Powers, 05 Mar 1808 - 06 Jan 1878, and his 1st wife, Maria Emeline (Corey) Powers, 02 Jun 1817 - 22 Sep 1848. Calvin and Maria are buried at Powers Cemetery. Charlotte Rose died in infancy. Minard Fitch Rose, 09 Dec 1841 - 08 Feb 1923, on 06 Oct 1861, married Ann Eliza (Powers) Rose, 02 Jan 1839 - 29 Mar 1916. She was the 2nd white child born in York Township, Steuben County, Indiana. Harriet was the daughter of Winn Powers, 08 Dec 1802 - 24 Jun 1883, and Betsey (Reeves) Powers, 11 May 1801 - 14 Apr 1873.
