STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1903, page 1, column 6 PETER W. RUSSELL, 20 Jul 1829 - 28 Jan 1903 Peter W. Russell was born in Manchester, Ontario county, New York, July 20, 1829, and died at his home in Angola, Ind., Jan. 28, 1903, aged 73 years, 6 months and 8 days. Deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Russell, and was one of five children, his mother dying when he was only seven years of age. August 24, 1854, he was joined in marriage with Susan M. Isenhour, at Hopewell, Ontario county, New York, a noble woman whose memory is held very sacred by those who knew her best. To the union were born two children, a son who died in infancy and a daughter, now Mrs. M. D. Teal, of Toledo, Ohio. Mrs. Russell died June 9, 1897. Mr. and Mrs. Russell came to Steuben county, Indiana, in 1856, first settling on a farm near Orland, and in 1859, they came to Angola taking charge of the Eureka hotel, located on the corner where W. C. Patterson's store now stands. Being courteous and obliging, they were especially adapted to this work and they were greatly prospered. After a few years he sold the hotel, and in 1866 it was destroyed by fire. Soon after this he bought what was known as the Eldorado, which thereafter was known as the Russell house, and in which he continued the hotel business until about 1880, when they moved to the beautiful home on South Wayne street. In 1871, Mr. Russell, in company with Charles F. and John J. Kinney, Wm. G. Croxton and J. A. Woodhull, established the banking house of Kinney & Co., the pioneer bank of the county. In the death of Mr. Russell, Angola loses one of its most prominent characters in business and social circles. For over forty years he had been the liveliest man in every associaion of which he formed a part. He was shrewd in business matters and accumulated a fortune estimated at about $150,000. Among his good offices was the aid he rendered the Tri- State Normal college, his last subscription amounting to $1,000. Mr. Russell will be missed in this community of which he has formed so prominent a part. Of late years his health had been failing, but young and strong in spirit, he fought the dread disease, paralysis, knowing all the time that the end of life for him was not very distant. Funeral services were held at his late home on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 31. Elder C. S. Medbury, of the Angola Christian church, officiating. Burial in Circle Hill cemetery.
