STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1897, page 5, column 5 CHESTER DERBY SALISBURY, 10 Feb 1818 - 28 Aug 1897 PICTURE INCLUDED IN THE OBITUARY The subject of the above sketch was born in Adam, Jefferson county, New York, in 1818; and departed this life at his home near Orland, Saturday, Aug. 18, '97, aged 79 years, 6 mos. and 19 days. His parents were natives of Vermont, and the father died when Chester was only eight years of age. His educational advantages were limited to a few terms in select school. He was apprenticed to learn the tanner and currier's trade and served until 1836, when he came to Steuben county. When he arrived here he was eighteen years of age and had only 12 and 1/2 cents in his pocket, but had an abundance of pluck and determination, and with the aid of his good wife, Julia Collins, whom he married in 1838, succeeded in accumulating a good fortune with many of the blessings and comforts of this life.
