Salisbury were held at the residence a week ago last Sabbath, Rev. Stewart of Kendallville, officiating. The remains were taken to Jamestown for burial. ITEM #2: Mrs. Julia Salisbury We publish below, the expression of the Orland Grange, on the death of Mrs. Julia Salisbury, the wife of our well known fellow citizen, Chester E. Salisbury, of Orland. This copy of the resolutions did not come to hand for an earlier publication. It is as follows: The committee to whom was referred the duty of expressing by resolution the feeling of the Grange upon the death of sister Julia Salisbury, respectfully submit the following report: WHEREAS, it has pleased the great Ruler of the universe to remove from among us by death, sister Julia Salisbury, and WHEREAS, the members of Harmony Grange, No. 886, desire to give expression to their own feelings of grief, as well as sympathy for the bereaved family of the deceased. Therefore, be it Resolved: That in the death of our beloved sister, Harmony Grange has lost a most honored and worthy member, one whose life has been that of a true woman, caring well for the interests of her household, kind and sympathizing as a friend and neighbor, and ever ready with kind words and good works when needed. Be it further Resolved: That while we sorrow for our own great loss, we extend to the bereaved husband, children and relatives of the deceased our warmest sympathy in this great affliction. Resolved: That a copy of these resolutions be presented to the family of the deceased, and that a copy be spread upon the minutes of the Grange. SAMUEL HARPER \ HANNAH HARPER Com. MARY NEIHARDT / ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Julia (Collins) Salisbury, 24 Aug 1821 - 12 Apr 1877, was the 1st wife of Chester Derby Salisbury, 10 Feb 1818 - 28 Aug 1897. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. On 01 Jul 1881, Chester married his 2nd wife, Abigail (Spring) Salisbury. In August 1885, he married his 3rd wife, Hattie (Shanklin) Salisbury. No other information on the 2nd and 3rd wives. Quoting from the Collins Family History, page 13, "He (Chester) was a very progressive farmer ever alert for improved methods. He owned the first self-binder used in his community. He was public spirited and kind. No one was ever turned from his door hungry. He and his good wife (Julia) took unfortunate children into their home as one of the family till they were able to shift for themselves. The life of the pioneer's wife was a hard one and Julia Collins cheerfully and efficiently did her share. Not only did she prepare the food for the big family but also wove and made the clothing for the entire family. She excelled in making the butter and cheese from the herd of 16 or 18 cows which helped very much in a financial way to make the home the attractive place that it was. Her early death was a very severe blow to the family." Julia was the daughter of Barton Collins, born 23 Feb 1794 at Ira, Richland County, VT, and Annahritte (Chaffee) Collins, 02 Jan 1797 - 16 Jul 1882. Barton Collins was the 1st white settler in Jamestown Township, Steuben County, IN. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Chester was the son of Abner Salisbury, 06 Jun 1784 - 26 May 1826, and Susan (Gore) Salisbury, 1790 - 1856. When 8 years of age, Chester's father died and the mother and children were each obliged to contribute toward the support of the family. He was truly a self made man, becoming prosperous through his own efforts. CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE OF JULIA AND CHESTER: Susan (Salisbury) Turner, 06 Mar 1839 - 27 Feb 1915, on 29 Nov 1860, married William Watrous Turner, 12 Aug 1831 - 14 Jul 1910. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Steuben County, IN. Sarah Ann (Salisbury) Ellis Whitney, 23 Jul 1842 - 26 Dec 1912, on 24 Aug 1862, married Charley Ellis who died in the Civil War. His burial place is unknown. Sarah's 2nd husband was Isaac Pennington Whitney, 10 Jun 1840 - 1883, burial place not listed. Sarah is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. Emily Alice Salisbury, 28 Apr 1845 - 28 Jan 1848, buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Merritt B. Salisbury, 29 Apr 1849 - 21 Nov 1914, buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Frank George Salisbury, 28 Nov 1854 - 28 Mar 1944, married Barbara Ellen (Pocock) Salisbury, 30 Jan 1857 -18 Jun 1926. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. She was the daughter of Levi Pocock, 03 Mar 1817 - 13 Jan 1905, and his 1st wife, Barbara (Yanney-originally spelled Jenni) Pocock who died in childbirth on 15 Feb 1864 and is buried in Ohio. The child, Emma Pocock, 15 Feb 1864 - 26 Apr 1951, is buried at Jamestown Cemetery where her father is buried. Dewitt C. Salisbury, 15 Mar 1857 - 14 Nov 1928, on 08 Aug 1878, married Ella (Reed) Salisbury, 18 Jun 1857 - 24 Oct 1928. SIBLINGS OF JULIA (COLLINS) SALISBURY: Viola K. (Collins) Hastings, 10 Nov 1822 - 19 Feb 1888, on 04 Apr 1844 in Steuben County, IN, married Moses S. Hastings, 12 Dec 1823? - 30 Jan 1888. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Thirza/Thurza F. (Collins) Mallory, 23 Apr 1824 - 28 Nov 1852, on 05 Dec 1844, became the 1st wife of Clayton Mallory, 28 Jul 1816 - 05 May 1903. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Sarah (Collins) Collins, 04 Oct 1825 - 21 Dec 1875, married Aaron Collins. Jane (Collins) Mallory, 23 Jun 1827 - 30 Aug 1883, on 29 Dec 1853, married her deceased sister's husband, Clayton Mallory, 28 Jul 1816 - 05 May 1903. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. George W. Collins, 17 Jan 1829 - 17 Oct 1912, married Avis (Walter) Collins, 06 Nov 1839 - 1913, daughter of Seymour and Orra (Coe) Walter. George and Avis are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Harriett (Collins) Saxton, 18 Jan 1831 - 11 Dec 1908, married E. B. Saxton who died 19 Feb 1907. Benjamin F. Collins, 05 Feb 1833 - 09 Feb 1855, buried at Jamestown Cemetery. William W. Collins, born 29 Jan 1835 per Collins Family History, page 9, died 09 Aug 1867, married Hattie (Smith) Collins, no other information. William is buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Phidella (Collins) Seeley, 11 Feb 1837 - 05 Mar 1909, on 25 Oct 1856, married Louis Seeley. Charles Harvey Collins, 10 Apr 1839 - 17 Nov 1896, married Lucy C. (Carroll) Collins, 03 Aug 1844 - 18 Dec 1915, daughter of Edward and Jane (Bonney) Carroll. Charles and Lucy are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. SIBLINGS OF CHESTER D. SALISBURY: Chester had 3 brothers and 4 sisters, 4 of whom died in childhood. Elijah G. Salisbury, married Abigail (Terry) Salisbury. Elijah died in Oakland, CA in 1877. Susan E. (Salisbury) Reed married Daniel E. Reed and was living in Pulaski, Oswego County, NY at the time the 1885 History was written. Harriett (Salisbury) Kibling is the widow of J. G. Kibling and was living in Bellville, Jefferson County, NY at the time the 1885 History was written.
