Sargent, aged 75 years, 6 months and 11 days. Deceased was born in Crawford Co., Penn. He learned the blacksmith trade when quite young, working at it for many years. In 1843 he was married to Eliza B. Thornbury who died Oct. 1, 1891. To the union were born six children, Theodore C., Mary, Harriett, Belle and Minna. In 1847 Mr. Sargent moved to a farm in Steuben county, Ind., but soon gave up farming and engaged in buying stock and keeping hotel at Metz. This line of business he followed until within five years of his death, his failing health causing him to retire from active business. When the call for volunteers was made in 1861, he was one of the first to respond, going out as 1st lieutenant in Co. A, 29th Indiana. Going south with his regiment in 1861 he remained until the spring of 1862 when on account of poor health he resigned his position and returned home. He was a generous hearted man and at all times would divide his last penny with any one in need. He was the first commander of Charles Case post, G.A.R., at Garrett.
