STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1904, page 1, column 5 JOHN SCHAEFFER, 11 Apr 1820 - 05 May 1904 John Schaefer was born in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, April 11, 1820, as the fifth child of the family of eleven children. Here he grew to manhood. In 1845 he came with others to Steuben county, Indiana, but returned again to Pennsylvania. He was married to Miss Eva Walmer on Nov. 4, 1847, and together they came to Steuben county in 1848. He moved onto the land which at the time of his death constituted his farm. Then it was a dense forest. He built a log house, cleared field after field and in the course of years transformed the forest into a beautiful farm. He was ever industrious, and by hard work and perseverance attained success. He was the father of seven children, two of whom preceded him in death, as also did the mother in 1901. He was ever a kind and dutiful father, was fond of his children and grand-children and was a kind neighbor and friend. In 1857, he was converted and joined the German M. E. church under the pastorate of Rev. P. B. Baker. As a christian he was consistent. He loved the house of God, and God's people. As long as health permitted he attended Divine services and even when not permitted to do so, still longed for the courts of our Lord. His experience of his adoption was clear. His faith did not shrink. He trusted his Savior, believing he would do all things well. During the last few years he was feeble, having several ailments. Two weeks preceding his death, he took to his bed and erysipelas set in which caused much pain, yet he never murmured or complained. On the morning of the 5th of May, 1904, his spirit took its flight to God. He had reached the age of 84 years and 24 days. He leaves to mourn, three sons and two daughters, David J., John W., Daniel A., Mrs. Elinor E. Drury and Mrs. Marilla M. Grim. Eight grand-children, two brothers and one sister and many relatives also remain behind. His funeral was held on Saturday afternoon, May 7, 1904, at the German M. E. church. His pastor, T. A. Speckman preached to a large audience from the text, Psalm 116: 15, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." A select quartet sang appropriate hymns. The remains were laid to rest in the Fremont cemetery by the side of his wife to await the resurrection day.
