STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1901, page 2, column 4 LELL MAY SEGUR, 06 Apr 1858 - 15 Sep 1901 Lell May Segur, daughter of James A. and Clarinda Segur was born on a farm in Scott township, Steuben Co., Ind., April 6, 1858. Leaving the district school and taking a six weeks course in the high school, she obtained a certificate for the first time and began teaching her first term of school the day after she was sixteen, and has taught for twenty-seven years educating herself in the meantime. Miss Segur died at Terre Haute, Ind., Sept. 15, 1901, aged 43 years, 5 months and 9 days. She has attended school at a high school, the Tri-State Normal School at Angola, where she was a charter member of the Crescent literary society, the M. E. college at Fort Wayne, and the State Normal at Terre Haute. Miss Segur was the youngest graduate of the Chautauquan Association class of 1885 at Rome City. She held a State teacher's license. At the age of sixteen she united with the Christian church at Metz, Ind., and has been an earnest Christian worker ever since, trusting God for aid in all of her work. President Sniff, of the Tri-State Normal college, who preached the funeral sermon at Angola where the deceased was buried, said: "Miss Segur was one of the noblest women I ever knew. I knew her as student, High school teacher and as a Christian woman. I knew her in her own home, where I was repeatedly the recipient of her noble Christian hospitality and to my mind she was at all times a living exponent of the principles of the highest ideals of a Christian life. She was no ordinary woman. Hers was a larger and very acute mind. Her education was exact and deep and she was a teacher of great force. Her work as high school principal in Angola and Decatur, Ind., covered a period of fourteen years. These were both places of responsibility especially the one at Decatur. Her influence on these communities was very great. During the eleven years of her administration at Decatur, that school was regarded one of the fullest and best taught and governed of any of the High schools of Northern Indiana. She enjoyed the rare distinction of being first both in government and teaching. Her home was a rest for any who lodged there. Her life was always useful, forceful and true, and she will be missed and honored by hundreds who have labored either side by side with her or under her guidance. It perhaps should further be said that this noble woman was never saving of her powers in behalf of the propagation of the gospel. She was always foremost in support of others who preached the gospel as well as ever ready to enlist her talents in teaching the principles of the gospel to others." STEUEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMER 18, 1901, page 5, column 4 Mrs. Elizabeth Pew, in the west part of town, received a telegraph message Monday forenoon from Terre Haute, Ind., announcing the death of Miss Lell Segur. The news was a shock to her friends here, for of late she has been in unusual good health, and was attending the State Normal preparing for higher work in teaching, although she held a state license and was acknowledged one of the best primary teachers in Indiana. Miss Segur was a Steuben county girl, and taught in the county and in Angola high school for several years. The body will be brought here today for burial, and funeral services will be held in the Christian church at three o'clock this afternoon.
