STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1903, page 1, column 5 CHARLES ALBERT SHACKFORD, 26 Nov 1848 - 08 Dec 1903 Charles Albert Shackford was born Nov. 26, 1848, at Cambridgeport, Mass., and died Dec. 8, 1903, at his home at Oak Grove Farm, one half mile north of Pleasant Lake, Indiana. He received his early education at Berwick Academy, South Berwick, Maine, and afterward spent the years 1862-3 at the Brimmer and English High school, Boston, Mass., and in the class of '65 of the High School of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He enlisted as Private in Co. F., 61st Illinois Vol., Inf., in 1864. He was detailed to guard an ammunition train and the whole squad were captured and finally taken as prisoners to Andersonville where he remained till the close of the war. In 1865-6, he went to sea as sailor on board the ship California and Bark Comet, during which time he sailed around Cape Horn, S. A., and made several trips to Honolulu. In 1867-8, he served as rodman and Asst. Engineer on the California Pacific R. R., Vallejo to Sacramento, at which time he helped to lay the route over the peaks of the Sierra Nevadas. The years 1872-96 he was employed in railroad work as agent, auditor and engineer on various railroads and places. From 1896 to 1899 he was a farmer at Pleasant Lake, Indiana. >From 1899 to the close of his life, he was engineer in charge of various contractors construction projects, such as docks, wharves and railroads. In 1887, he united with the Presbyterian church at Orville, O., and afterwards a member of the Westminister Presbyterian church of Toledo, from which he with all his family brought letters to the First Congregational church of Angola in 1897. Bother Shackford was always a faithful and consistent member of his church. After an illness of several months he "slipped awa' Home." Appropriate services were held at his late home, Thursday afternoon, Dec. 10. His pastor, Rev. Cyrus K. Stockwell officiating, assisted by Rev. Casper Frye. Comforting and helpful thoughts were drawn from Psalm 46:1-"God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble," and from the clause "My father's God-Exodus 15:2. The Odd Fellows of which he was Vice Grand, were present in a body, and closed with their burial service. Burial was made Friday, Dec. 11, 1903, in Forest cemetery, Toledo, Ohio, beside that of his mother. He is survived by a wife and three daughters. They are buried at Forest Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio. Charles was the son of Amazia G. and Adaline Shackford. DAUGHTERS: Edna Grace (Shackford) Driskell, born 1879, married William O. Driskell. Alice M. (Shackford) Lacey, married Dr. J. R. Lacey. Mabel F. Shackford. ADA MARRIED SECOND, on 12 Aug 1906, Lewis I. Matson, 12 Oct 1844, no date of death. Ada was his 2nd wife. He was the son of John Matson and Margaret (Waterman) Matson. Lewis is buried at Clark Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Lewis I. Matson's 1st wife was Orcelia R. (Clark) Mason, 01 Mar 1845 - 29 Jan 1906, buried at Clark Cemetery. Orcelia was Ada's aunt. Orcelia has an inscription on her parents stone and on Lewis' stone. Ada's parents were Omar I. Clark, 25 Jul 1832 - 11 Sep 1895, and Frances C. (Goldsmith) Clark, 1834 - 1883, his 1st wife. Frances was the daughter of Harvey and Phebe A. Goldsmith. Omar and Frances are buried at Clark Cemetery. Omar I. Clark and Orcelia R. (Clark) Matson are children of Dr. Alonzo P. Clark, 23 Dec 1807 - 03 Feb 1867, and Betsey (Bump) Clark, 14 Jan 1808 - 26 Mar 1878. They are buried at Clark Cemetery.
