HERMAN C. SHUTTS from Steuben Republican, Wed. May 5, 1897, pg 4, col 3

        Herman C. Shutts was born in York township, Sandusky county, Ohio, 
June 6, 1839, and died April 27, 1897, aged 57 years, 10 months and 21 days.
        He was the son of Charles and Susan (Richey) Shutts, natives of 
Tompkins county, New York. His father died in 1859, and the year following, 
Mr. Shutts, at the age of 21 years, came to Steuben county, Indiana, and 
bought the farm in Jamestown township, now one of the most beautiful to be 
found in any section, where he resided continuously until his death. In 1862
he was joined in marriage to Mary Collins, daughter of Samuel and Betsey 
Collins, who, with four children, Charles S. Shutts, Mrs. Charles Turner, 
Mrs. Horace Davis and Mrs. Frank Mallory, survive. Mr. Shutts was called to 
positions of responsibility by the citizens of the county, being elected 
trustee of his township in 1878 and reelected in (year unclear), and elected
county commissioner in 1885, serving two terms. He was an efficient officer,
and we feel safe in saying that no citizen of Steuben county was ever more 
highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends than was Mr. Shutts. He had 
been in poor health for the past three years, his sickness assuming a 
serious form last fall. Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday, 
April 29, at 10 a.m., conducted by Elder Charles S. Medbury, pastor of the 
Christian church in Angola, and were attended by a very large circle of 
friends and neighbors who thus paid tribute to the memory of an upright and 
honored citizen.

        In the books, "Cemeteries of Steuben County, Indiana, 1990" by 
Audree Siebel Lewis, page 1658, his mother Susan's last name is spelled 
"Ritchie". In another listing in the book, her first name is spelled 
"Susanna". 
        Herman's wife, Mary (Collins) Shutts was born about 28 Nov 1844 and 
died 28 December 1923, aged 79 yrs. 1 mo. She was the daughter of Samuel and
Betsey (Bush) Collins. Mary's 2nd husband was Cortland Norton Wilder, born 
02 Oct 1832 and died 10 Apr 1904.

        Childen were:

        Elmer E. Shutts was born 11 Oct 1863 and died 11 Jan 1864.
        Nella Shutts died 07 Feb 1865 - a child.
        Charles S. Shutts was born 04 Aug 1866 and died 19 Apr 1933. He 
married Margaret Elizabeth Rubley, born 19 Dec1870, died 29 Feb 1956, the daughter of 
John and Mary Ann (Frick) (Rohrabaugh) Rubley Sr.
        Lucy May (Shutts) Turner, born 21 Mar 1869, died 14 Sep 1938, 
married Charles H. Turner, son of William Watrous and Susan (Salisbury) 
Turner.
        Jennie Adel (Shutts) Davis, born 29 Sep 1870, died 14 Sep 1938, 
married Horace M. Davis, son of David G. and Frances (Morse) Davis.
        Erva L. (Shutts) Mallory, born in 1874, died 02 May 1956, married 
Frank L. Mallory (1868 - 1949).
