STEUBREN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1903, page 1, column 6 JAMES H. SLADE, REV., 31 Aug 1829 - 19 Jun 1903 Rev. James H. Slade was born in Farmington, New York, August 31, 1829, and died in Fremont, Indiana, June 19, 1903. He was married August 31, 1850 to Laura Hoag, who died in 1875. He was again united in marriage to Margaret Everhart, Jan. 22, 1876, she having died on Dec. 23, 1898. Mr. Slade was converted in early manhood and while living upon his farm near Alvarado, entered the ministry of the North Indiana Conference Methodist Episcopal church, and was appointed to the new Corydon charge in 1862. He also served the following charges: Allen, Ossian, Harlan, Akron, Larwill and Middlebury. He retired in 1878 from the active ministry, after 11 years of labor, and again took up his residence upon his farm near Alvarado, where he lived until 1883, when he with his family moved to Angola, where he lived until his wife died. About three years ago he went to Fremont, where he made his home with his daughter until his death. Surviving him are four sons and one daughter. Mrs. Williams, a grand-daughter, when a child lived with him, and she, with three other grand-children also survive. For years, Father Slade had been a loyal christian worker, faithful to the cause, and devoted to the church. He was a member of the Epworth League and Sunday school, and took an active part in each service he was able to attend. While in Fremont he has acted as Class Leader, and was always loyal to his pastor. By his death, the community loses a good citizen, the church a devoted Christian brother. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. F. A. Reichelderfer, at the M. E. church in Fremont, on Monday morning at 9 o'clock, and interment at Richland Center cemetery. Charles Slade, 1867 - 1938, married Helena Belle (Gunder) Slade, 28 Mar 1873 - Oct 1973, 100 YEARS OLD, daughter of George and Sarah (Gerkin) Gunder. Charles and Helena are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. Possible son, (James) Liberty Slade, is shown living next door to Rev. Melissa Slade, wife, married, female, white, age 26, born in Ohio, keeping house. Luella Slade, dau., single, female, white, age 2, born in Ind. James Liberty Slade, 1854 - 1926, on 04 Oct 1874, married Melissa (McLaughlin) Slade, born about 1854. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. Rev. James H. Slade, on 22 Jan 1876, married Margaret Ann (Douglas) Everhart Slade, who died 23 Dec 1898. She was the widow of Joseph M. Everhart who died 03 May 1873, aged 40 years, 2 months and 19 days, buried at Alvarado Cemetery. CHILDREN OF THE 2nd MARRIAGE: Jennie Slade, born about 1873. Arthur B.
