STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1899, page 1, columns 6, 7 THOMAS BENTON SLOSS, M.D., 14 Aug 1815 - 07 Apr 1899 Thomas Benton Sloss was born in the county of Cavan in Ireland on the 14th day of August, 1815. Before leaving Ireland his parents were in good circumstances, but misfortune deprived them of all their property and they came to Licking county, Ohio, in 1822, with but little means. They remained there until about 1835, when they removed to Dearborn, a village within ten miles of Detroit. There was a large family of children and they were obliged to struggle for a living. He remained with the family until his mother's death which occurred when he was 28 years of age. In the meantime he had studied medicine in the office of P. J. Bope, of Dearborn. He then took a medical course in the Starling Medical College at Columbus, Ohio, and then located in Orland, Indiana, in 1848, where he commenced the practice of medicine. In 1852 he married Mrs. Sarah J. Stone. In politics he was a Cass Democrat up to the Fremont campaign in 1856 when his anti-slavery feeling induced him to warmly espouse the Republican cause. In the fall of 1856, he was elected upon the Republican ticket as a member of the State Legislature. His wife died March 11, 1868. He afterwards married Miss Lida Knight, who died in 1872. His success as a physician can be easily told. He commenced practicing medicine in Orland in 1848, nevr sought another location, and many of his friends induced him to visit them when sick even after he gave up general practice. He amassed a large fortune and business often called him to other places, but he looked upon Orland as his home till in failing health he resided entirely with the family of his nephew, Mr. John VanFossen, where he died April 7th, 1899, aged 83 years, 7 months and 23 days. Funeral Services were held in the congregational church, April 10, Rev. Bonny preaching the funeral discourse, and he was laid to rest in the Orland cemetery. He will be greatly missed. His many friends have the sympathy of the Orland people. Additional Information: Thomas Benton Sloss, M.D., 14 Aug 1815 - 07 Apr 1899, married 1st, Mrs. Sarah J.
