STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1903, page 1, column 4 LULU SMILEY, 30 May 1879 - 02 Dec 1903 Lulu Smiley, youngest daughter of George and Catherine Smiley, was born May 30, 1879, on a farm in Otsego township, Steuben county, and died Dec. 2, 1903, at the Wood hospital in Angola, aged 24 years, 6 months and 23 days. She received a good common education in the public schools and attended the Tri-State Normal College several terms. About three years ago she entered the Samaritan hospital, at Sioux City, Iowa, for a course as trained nurse, but failing health compelled her to give up the work, her disposition and gentle ways so nicely fitted her for, to seek relief for her afflictions, but after years of suffering she quietly went to sleep just when her friends had built up hopes for her speedy recovery. She was a wonderful example of patience, never complained and even when her own sufferings were taking her very life, she found comfort in cheering those about her and could always see a silver lining to every cloud. She obeyed the gospel in 1898. She leaves a mother, two brothers, two sisters and one half brother here in town with other relatives. Funeral services were held in the Angola Christian church Friday afternoon, Dec., 4, Elder C. S. Medbury officiating. LOVING TRIBUTE Those of us who have been so closely connected with Lulu in hospital life the past four months knew her only to love her, and those who knew her best, loved her most. There is a fragrance and beauty about a noble life like hers that lingers long after the life itself has passed on to the other world. She always looked for the good and found it; always trying to make someone more comfortable and happy. We feel that we are better and richer for having known her, if only for a short time. We have but sweet and pleasant memories of life together here, and though we sadly miss her, yet she was such a sufferer, we feel that our loss is her gain and that she has the "best that heaven itself could give her-Rest." And with the mother and sister we have met so often here and learned also to love, we must sincerely sympathize.
