STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1900 JOHN SNYDER, 29 Jun 1828 - 10 Feb 1900 John Snyder was born in Crawford county, Ohio, June 29, 1828, and died at his home in Pleasant Lake, Ind., Saturday, Feb. 10, 1900, aged 71 years, 7 months and 11 days. He was married to Cornelia Hopp in Richland county, Ohio, June 16, 1851. To them were born six children, three of whom preceded their father to the other side, Willie, Mrs. Sadie Noyes and Mrs. Orpha Murray. The wife and three daughters, Mrs. Zelia Case and Mrs. Lettie Chadwick, of Pleasant Lake and Mrs. Nellie Chadwick, of Carthage, Indiana, remain. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. Snyder moved to Steuben county from their home in Ohio, settling on a farm in Otsego township. They have ever since resided in the county. Since 1883 they have lived in Pleasant Lake. That Mr. Snyder played an honorable part in the defense of his country in the war of the rebellion, is shown by his military record. He enlisted in Otsego township August 4, 1862, as a member of company H, 74th Indiana volunteers, and at the organization of the company was elected first, or orderly sergeant. On Dec. 29, 1862, he was commissioned by Governor Morton as second lieutenant and duly mustered as such April 17, 1863. Lieutenant Snyder participated with his company and regiment in all its marches and engagements, ever true and faithful in the duties of a soldier, record unblemished and honorable. At the battle of Chickamauga, in the first day's fighting, September 19th, Lieut. Snyder was wounded and being unfit for duty was sent home on furlough. While at home he was sick with typhoid fever, but returned to his company as soon a possible and as he was yet unfit for duty tendered his resignation, which was accepted May 2, 1865. Mr. Snyder united with the U. B. Church at Otsego, in 1853, under the ministry of Elder Thomas. During the years in which he worked with this church he served as Sunday school superintendent and class leader. About 1880 he united with the U. B. church at Pleasant Lake, where he has since lived and worked. His record as a soldier of the cross, like that of his country, has been one of faithful service and honor. Sep. 22, 1899, he was taken sick with what proved to be typhoid fever, and since then has been sinking. During this long illness he has manifested a cheerful, christian patience commendable in all. In him a loving husband and father, a good citizen and neighbor, a brave soldier and a noble christian man has passed away. Funeral from the U. B. church, Pleasant Lake, Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 2:30 p.m., Rev. J. S. smith, officiating. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: John Snyder/Snider, 29 Jun 1828 - 10 Feb 1900, married Cornelia H.
