Sowle Who departed this life at Angola, Ind., Aug. 6, 1909, was born in Evans Mills, Jefferson county, New York, Sept. 3, 1838, and moved to Indiana at the age of 11 years, locating in Fremont, Steuben county, Ind. When eighteen years of age he removed to Angola and commenced clerking for George Emerson, who kept a dry goods store, and Mr. Sowle worked in Mr. Emerson's store ten years. Nov. 3, 1862, he married Zella Crockett. During the war he clerked in a sutler's camp in the Cumberland mountains, and returning to Angola after the war he entered into the mercantile business with Lawrence Gates. Later he went into the merchant tailoring business, where he established quite a large and prosperous business. After sustaining heavy losses during a severe business panic, he clerked for Thomas Gillis for several years. For a short period thereafter he went to Battle Creek, Mich., remaining two years and returning to Angola he entered into the painting and decorating business and continued in this line until a few months prior to his death. Mr. Sowle's demise was very sudden and unexpected even to members of his family, and was a severe blow to his many friends and acquaintances in Angola and elsewhere. Mr. Sowle was a man who had many staunch friends, being a man of high ideals and fine character. Always patient, and of a lovable disposition, he was beloved by all who knew him. His home life was characteristic of the man. His devotion to his family and friends was one of his manly, characteristic qualities. He was unselfish and charitable to a marked degree, and he and his wife lived an ideal home life, being one of the most devoted of couples. Mr. Sowle had a kind and cheerful word for everyone with whom he came in contact, and he was never so happy as when doing for others. While not at the time of his death, affiliating with any denomination, he was a man who was a firm believer in all that was noble and good. He is survived by his wife, Lazella Sowle, his sons, Roy O. Sowle, of Dayton, Ohio, Guy D. Sowle, of Clovis, New Mexico, and daughter, Mrs. Lillian Bartlett, of Detroit, and his sisters, Mrs. Sarah Burdick, of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Julia Kane, of Hillsdale. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sowle five children, two of whom Leila and Ray having preceded their father to the great beyond. Ray Sowle, who died Jan 22, 1900, will be remembered by his many friends and acquaintance(s), by whom he was loved and respected. (Picture included with obituary) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Leander M. Leander was the son of Adam W. A. Sowle, 20 Jan 1806 - 18 Oct 1877, and Experience (Whaley) Sowle, 16 May 1809 - 06 Jan 1899. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. Leander was the grandson of Joseph Sowle, 30 Apr 1785 - 01 Apr 1862 (30 Apr 1875 per familysearch), and Rachel (Allen) Sowle, 1790 - 15 Feb 1851. They are buried at Sowle Cemetery. Lazella was the daughter of Oliver Asa Crockett, 04 Mar 1818 - 15 Mar 1904, and his 1st wife, Laura M. Scoville, 1825 - 1867. Oliver and Laura are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE OF LEANDER AND LAZELLA: Leila M. Sowle, 20 Dec 1863 - 29 Jul 1864, buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. Roy O. Sowle, no dates. Lillian M. (Sowle) Bartlett, 1869 - 1933, married Judge C. L. Bartlett, no dates. Lillian is buried at Circle Hill Cemetery. Judge Bartlett's burial place unknown. Guy D. Sowle, 1872, no date of death, On 22 Dec 1895, married Nellie (Carpenter) Sowle, no further information. Ray T. Sowle, 1875, 22 Jan 1900, buried at Circle Hill Cemwetery. A son, Claude Sowle, is listed as 2 years of age on the 1880 United States Census. SIBLINGS: Leander was one of 11 children.
