STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 1904, page 1, column 6 PETER SOWLE, 02 Feb 1835 - 31 Mar 1904 Peter Sowle was born in Montgomery county, New York, Feb. 2, 1835, and died at his home northwest of Angola, Ind., March 31, 1904, aged 62 years, 1 month and 29 days. In 1841, he with his parents moved to Portage county, Ohio, and in 1854 he came with his parents to Steuben county, Indiana. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. D., Ninth regiment Indiana volunteers, serving three years in his country's service, and was honorably discharged April 3, 1865. He was married Dec. 10, 1865, to Elizabeth Gleason. To this union were born three sons, Benjamin D., Russell and Myron L., Russell dying in infancy. The two sons with the wife, seven grandchildren, one brother, two sisters and many friends are left to mourn their loss. In 1885, he united with the M. E. church, and when lying upon his bed of sickness with his wife by his bedside, fulfilling the promise she gave him to administer to his comfort, he would say to her, "We are not the rulers of our own destiny, but that God's will be done." He was a loving husband and kind father. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. G. Neal at the Methodist church on Saturday afternoon, the sermon being on the Characteristics of a Soldier." A large congregation was present and the Grand Army Post officiated, using their beautiful service. Burial in the Old cemetery. Sowle died 08 Nov 1871, aged 1 year. Buried at Old Angola Cemetery. Myron Leslie Sowle, 1875 - 1954, married Rhoda Jane (Wells) Sowle, 18787 - 1956.
