Steuben-Republican 13 June 1917 P.6 clm 3 Cyrus Spade was born in Springfield, Ohio January 22, 1842. He was one of a family of 15 children; three sisters and five brothers are left to mourn the loss of a good brother. At 12 years of age, he united with the German Lutheran Church and his whole life was lived true to the line of Christian principles. In 1862, Mr. Spade answered his country's call and enlisted in Cleveland in an independent company of 100 picked men of Barber's sharp shooters, chosen as expert marksmen. They were armed with the Henry 16 Cal. Shooting rifles, and were never known to be driven back in an engagement. They belonged to the army of the Cumberland and marched with Sherman to the Sea. As a soldier, Mr. Spade was ever ready and willing to do his duty, in camp, on the field of action, on the picket line, or in any station that fell his lot. He was obedient and respectful to his officers, generous and kind to his comrades under all circumstances. The patriotic blood coursed through his veins like a stream of bfire, no taint of disloyalty lurked there. The homage and love for his country's flay was a deep rooted and lasting one. For its preservation and an undivided union he freely gave four years service of his young manhood and recieved an honorable discharge at the close of the war. August 25, 1867, he was married to Sarah Hendry, of Springfield, Ohio. Ten children blessed this home which was a happy one, eight of whom remain to mourn the loss of a good father. The wife and mother died November 8, 1899. Mr. Spade was patient and thoughtful of others, through all the long weary weeks of his suffering. He longed for life and health, but murmured not when on Tursday morning, June 5 1917, taps were sounded-- lights out, by order of the great commander, he entered into the camping ground just across the mystic river. A splendid heritage he leaves to his children in the memory of the true Christian life of their father. Mr. Spade was an honest, manly man, one of the noblest works of God. Funeral services were held at the East Gilead Evangelical Church, on June 7, conducted by E.W. Gray of Hillsdale. Interment in East Gilead Cemetery. *Note by J.A.
