STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1901, PAGE 1, COLUMNS 6. 7 JOHN SPERO/SPEAROW, 12 Jan 1831 - 15 Apr 1901 John Spero was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, Jan. 12, 1831, and died at Kendallville, Indiana, April 15, 1901, aged 70 years, 3 months and 3 days. When but a mere babe his father, the late James Spero of LaGrange county, moved to Canton, Stark county, Ohio. The family resided there until the spring of 1846, when they moved to Indiana. The deceased was the oldest son of a family of thirteen children. October 24, 1853, he was married to his first wife, Louisa J. Curtis, a native of Monroe county, New York. She died March 1, 1879. To this union were born three children-John A. and Jas. H., of Steuben and LaGrange counties, respectively, and Schuyler C., now a resident of Berkeley, Cal. In 1859 he visited Pike's Peak and other points in Colorado, which were at that time engaging the attention of the fortune-seeker. He returned within a year, and in the fall of 1861, enlisted in company H, Forty-fourth Indiana volunteer Infantry. Among the battles in which he participated may be mentioned Fort Donelson, Fort Henry, Shiloh, Perryville and Stone River. Owing to disabilities he was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tenn., Jan. 20, 1863. The present Mrs. Spero and deceased were joined in marriage June 13, 1880. She was Anna G. Maybee and was a native of Ohio. He was a great worker and was much attached to his home. He was a life long Republican, having cast his first ballot for John C. Fremont in 1856. He was a genial, kind-hearted man, and leaves a host of friends who mourn the loss. The funeral took place at East Springfield church, Thursday, April 18, Rev. F. A. Stamm, of Orland, minister officiating. His mother, Susanna (Stauffer/Stauver) Spero/Spearow, 1801 - 22 Feb 1849, was born in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died at Springfield, LaGrange County, Indiana. The parents were married on 14 Oct 1828 in Annvill, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. John Married 1st, Louisa J. (Curtis) Spero/Spearow, 22 Oct 1834 - 01 Mar 1879. He married 2nd on 13 Jun 1880, Anna G.
