KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, INDIANA. PUBLISHED IN THE STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, 28 Oct 1891. WILLIAM W. SQUIER, 21 Jun 1821 - 23 Oct 1891 DIED - At his home in Angola, October 23, 1891, William W. Squier, aged 70 years. Deceased was born in Ontario county, New York, June 21, 1821. In 1833, with his father's family, he moved to Sanduskey county, Ohio. He came to Steuben county in 1843 and in 1853 was married to Elizabeth Burnside, who survives him. After his marriage he resided in LaGrange county for about ten years, returning to Angola in the spring of 1863, which has since been his home. For forty years he has lived in this town. Few men in the community are better known or more highly respected than he; few men can die leaving a record so free from blemish. He was initiated into Odd Fellowship by Angola lodge No. 180 of the state of Indiana on May 27 1865. The members of said lodge soon discovered that he was the right kind of man to assist them in their work, and in October following elected him as their permanent secretary. After the expiration of his term of service he filled various offices until September, 1860(this does not seem correct), when he was elected as recording secretary, six months thereafter was advanced to vice grand and the next term occupied the office of noble grand, the presiding officer of the lodge. As past grand, in November, 1869, he was elected to the honorable position of representative to the grand lodge of Indiana which he filled with honor and respect. When in 1873 the laws were changed, so that a member was not obliged to pass through the office of secretary so as to be entitled to promotion, he was elected for thirty-two terms as its secretary, filling the position so faithfully that no brother in the lodge would allow his name to be presented for nomination against him. Brother Squier died as its secretary. He joined encampment No. 60 at Angola, January 5, 1860, and within three months was elected as treasurer and in November was its representative to the grand encampment of Indiana. His usefulness did not end then and with but few exceptions he served until his death. Any member might feel proud of such a record. In addition to the many good examples as a true Odd Fellow, as a safe adviser and an active worker at all times within his lodge, he left his handwriting upon all of its records since 1868. The funeral was held at the Congregational church, Sunday, October 25, at 2 o'clock, Pastor C. A. Gleason officiating. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: William W.
