STRUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 1901, page 8, column 3 ELMIRE STAFFORDD, 1853 - 02 Jul 1901 Mrs. John Stafford passed to a higher life July 2nd, after nine years of suffering which she bore with christian patience. As a wife and mother she was self-sacrificing and affectionate. As a neighbor, kind and thoughtful; as a friend, true and steadfast, always ready to sympathize in the sorrows and misfortunes of others. The friendless found in her a friend ever ready to help and encourage them. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock in the M. E. church, of which she was a faithful member and, until her sickness, an untiring worker for the good of the church. She leaves in her late home a husband, son and daughter who are very lonely without mother to greet them. Burial in Green Lawn. She was not the daughter of Elmire. Edna's mother was Margaret Foster and her father was Joseph Stafford. I have found there are several Joseph Staffords and very little is known about my great-grandfather Joseph. My grandmother, Edna Cain, never would talk about him. He took off and left the family never to be heard from again and Edna said he was no good. That is all my mother, Ruth Ferrier, was ever told. My grandparents - David Owen Cain and Edna May (Stafford) Cain are buried in Fremont Cemetery. My great-grandmother Margaret Foster is buried south of David & Edna. My grandmother was ashamed of her mother because she was (supposedly) married three times. I assume that is why my grandmother had the name of Foster engraved on her mother's (Margaret) tombstone. My grandmother paid for the tombstone. Margaret Foster, my great-grandmother married Ed Hutchinson and approx. 1889 adopted a daughter, Corrine Hutchinson. She also was married to Jasper Barnes June 18, 1877 Branch County, Michigan. I have not be able to find a marriage license for Margaret and Ed Hutchinson. Found where Joseph Stafford enlisted in the Civil War August 15, 1862 at York and deserted February 14, 1863 at Grand Junction, Tenn. He was born and raised in Ireland. I have a picture of Margaret hanging on our Living Room wall. Both of my sons are interested in family history. My maiden name was Mafalda Ferrier.
