BLISS EUGENE STAYNER JR. from Steuben Republican, July 16, 1941, page 1, column 7 BLISS E. STAYNER JR. Bliss E. Stayner Jr., only son of Bliss E. Stayner and Irene Scripture Stayner, was born at Orland, Indiana, March 11, 1920, and died at Angola, Indiana, July 9, 1941, aged 21 years and nearly four months. When Bliss was but three years of age his father died, leaving the wife and small son. When Bliss was six years of age his mother died leaving Bliss an orphan. The home of his grandparents, Oliver and Nellie Stayner, was the home of Bliss until the death of the grandparents and no mother could have given more love and affection and solicitous care to her son that that given to Bliss by Nellie Stayner. He was guided by the wise counsel and advice of his grandfather who taught him the machinist and blacksmith trade, and the honesty and integrity displayed by Bliss during his short life was due to the training that he received in the home provided by the loving grandparents. After the death of his grandparents, his cousins, Ora and Naomi Stayner, moved into the old Stayner house and have made a home for him as though he had been a member of their own family. Bliss was graduated from the Orland high school in the summer of 1940 and has engaged in machinist and repair work much of the time for several years. He was a very friendly young man and had a host of young friends who will miss him in and about Orland. He leaves surviving him three uncles and two aunts: Kern F. Scripture of Orland, his mother's brother; and Winn Stayner of Raleigh, North Dakota; Frank Stayner of Deer Lodge, Montana; Mrs. Lucile Hedglin of Hudson, Indiana; and Laura S. Blanning of Cambridge, Massachusetts; brothers and sisters of his father, together with a large number of cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon in Orland, with Rev. Howard Warner, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating, assisted by Rev. W. B. Fallis of the Methodist church. Close friends of the deceased acted as pall bearers, and girls of the high school acted as flower bearers. Mrs. Ellen Stoldt, with Mrs. Geraldine Norton, accompanist, furnished music. Burial was in the family lot at Jackson Prairie cemetery, south of Orland. Submitted By: Mona Hilden-Beckwith E-mail: hilbeck123@att.net
