MRS. W. L. STAYNER from Steuben Republican, April 22, 1914, pg 1, col 5 MRS. W. L. STAYNER (Picture included in obit) Jane Matilda Castell was born at Middleton Cheney, Oxfordshire, England, March 28, 1847. When about three years of age she came to the United States, arriving here in June, 1850. Since that time she has lived continuously in the vicinity of the home where she passed away April 15, 1914, aged 67 years, 17 days. She was educated in the Orland and Angola High schools, and taught twenty-nine terms, beginning to teach when fourteen years old. During her childhood Sunday school days she committed (to memory) innumerable Bible verses which she could repeat accurately at any time. In 1873 she united with the M. E. church, and whenever health and circumstances permitted was glad to attend services. July 4, 1875, she was united in marriage to William L. Stayner, and for nearly 39 years they have traveled life's pathway together, sharing equally the joys and sorrows they encountered on the way. To this union six children were born, Tillie (Mrs. Robert Evans), Roy, John, Zoa and William, and one child that died in infancy. Mrs. Stayner was especially devoted to her home and family, spending her time, strength and energy in acts of kindness and helpfulness for her own loved ones and others. For the last few years she has not been in good health, and since New Year's day has been entirely blind. On Friday, March 27, she went to Ft. Wayne, where the same evening she had a cataract removed from one eye. For two weeks she remained in the hospital, her husband staying with her. On Friday, April 10th, they returned home, her sight restored, and apparently in good physical condition, aside from a slight sore throat. But complications arose which we cannot understand, and she rapidly grew worse, passing quietly away on Wednesday morning, surrounded by her family. Besides the husband and children those who are left to mourn their loss, are six grandchildren, Alfred and Elizabeth Evans, Ora, Hazel, Leon and Robbie Stayner; one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, one brother, John Castell, one sister, Ann Castell, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. While her sight was restored for but a short time, yet it was a blessed restoration as she was permitted to see again her loved ones and the home she loved before she left for the home beyond. On Friday, just three weeks from the day of her operation, and one week from the day she returned home, she was laid to rest in Jackson Prairie cemetery. The services were conducted at the home by Rev. John Humfreys, using, by request, the text: "I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith."
