LELAND W. STAYNER from Steuben Republican, April 26, 1950, pg 2, col 2 MILITARY RITES HELD FOR ORLAND SAILOR Leland W. Stayner, 24, son of Mrs. Lissie Smith, of Orland, died Monday, April 17, at the U. S. Naval Hospital in Sand Diego, California, of injuries received when struck by a car as he was returning to the Naval Base at San Diego. The body arrived at the Weicht Funeral Home on Saturday, and funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Orland with the Rev. J. Morgan Reese, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating and burial was in the Jackson Prairie cemetery. Military funeral rites were in charge of members of the Orland Post of the American Legion, and a naval escort was sent from San Diego with the body. Stayner had served in the Navy during World War II and had reenlisted about a year ago. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Smith, his stepfather, Dewey Smith, two brothers and three sisters. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Leland's father, Floyd Oliver Stayner, was born in Orland on 16 Sept 1900 and died 15 Feb 1936. His mother, Lissie (Fair) (Stayner) Smith was born 20 Aug 1902, in Howe, LaGrange County, Indiana,, and died 16 May 1999 at Miller's Merry Manor, LaGrange, Indiana. On 09 Mar 1946, she married Dewey Smith who was born in 1901 and died 30 Dec 1976. Leland was preceded in death by a brother, Basil Henry Stayner, 26 Jun 1933 - 12 Jan 1934.
